‘Slave Trails’ high-tech art display marks where some slaves were sold in French Quarter

Artist Marcus Brown’s “Slavery Trails” sculptures don’t exist in the real world. But if you stand beneath the oaks on Esplanade Avenue on the edge of the French Quarter and activate your iPhone with a special QR code, a dozen eerie, digital ghosts will appear on your screen, hovering a few feet above the dusty neutral ground.

Brown's ghosts mark the spot of a former market where men, women and children were bought and sold. Like the ghosts, the long-ago slave market is invisible now. But Brown wants people to know that, sociologically anyway, it’s still there.

quote:

The technology Brown employed is called augmented reality. On the steamy afternoon of June 20, passersby studied the instructional marker that Brown has placed on the ground beneath an official historic marker describing the slave trade, and coaxed their phones to summon the ghosts. They discovered you can see them from all directions, and –disconcertingly — you can walk right through them. More disconcerting still is the fact that, from certain angles, the pink figures seem to be hanging from the trees

Someone should go and paint over half them, "Bought and Owned by a black person."

Odd choice. Black seems most logical.

Very strange. Some people just like being slaves.

I could have accepted this as a legitimate artistic display if they hadn't insisted on pulling down all the statues.

Either it is too painful to be reminded or it isn't.

Sure as shite is in New Orleans. Now go get yourself a $20 PB&J at Turkey and the Wolf, and wallow in your guilt while dining in such an overly gentrified area of town.

Just wait until Latoya puts a weave on the Court House. Then it will all come together.

Kind of cool, but now let’s do one at the location of every black person murdered by another black person in this city. He’ll stay a busy man…

I value human life, but I’m hard pressed to care about the sanctity of black lives from 160+ years ago when today blacks don’t give a shite about other black lives.

Yes

I think it’s ultimately about power though. It justifies special privileges for the minority, and the suppression of the majority.

For that reason it will never end. These people will never give it up.

This is a private thing right, and not something the City funded correct? If so, then I have zero problem with this and can actually appreciate someone putting the time in to research this if these locations are factual. They really could have made the graphics a little better though lol. As long as this is strictly for history, I don't have a problem with someone raising awareness to what took place in their city. So long as it's not taxpayer funded and in the mold of white guilt
