Depends. How long does it take to burn to death and how long for a deflated balloon to crash?

It's usually the carbon monoxide/lack of oxygen that kills you rather than the actual fire.

In a house fire with little ventilation, not open air.

LINK

If you look at the pic in the link, you can see that the gondola is on fire. As they go down, all the flames and smoke are pushed right up into the passengers. It's like putting your mouth over a tail pipe then starting the car.

Google image search, folks. That pic is from a previous event, not from today. I notice Drudge has the the pic too, so people must be assuming it's current.

I did a job near the Sonoma County Airport for a couple weeks and they do a lot of hot air balloon rides out of there. After watching 3 crash landings in 5 days, my interest in riding in a hot air balloon quickly faded.

It wasn't so bad:

Free Falling?

If you're going to make a joke about something like this it should at least be funny.

When I was in BR, they had a ballon gathering. One split open and went down, with fatal consequences.

Saw the video on TV and scratched balloons off the to do list.

Do you recall when you saw this? I remember watching WAFB at morning and noon and they were covering a hot air balloon gathering in the late '80s or early '90s. Video showed a balloon coming down but all I could see was the basket and pilot. I could see the flame come out of the burner as he was reportedly trying to empty as much fuel out of the tank. The video went to black when it and they reported his death.

Unless it killed me instantly, it would be the sudden stop at the ground that killed me. I would take my chances falling to my death over burning alive.

Or be an OT Ballers and jump from the basket to the top of another balloon using my knife to slow me down as I slid down the side and jumped from balloon to balloon.

They might have suffocated. Fire consuming all the nearby oxygen.

Very sad.

It would have been in the early 90's. I was there. One of the seams split on the fabric. There are heat tabs sewn into the envelope of the balloons. The seams are weakened by flying the balloon "too hot." Once his split, she was seen rocking the basket back and forth trying to get the throat to open and heat the air.

His basket landed on a car near Airline highway. Witnesses said he was last seen with a leg over the basket trying to jump out. IIRC, that's about how he was found, partially out of the basket. Acadian was working the festival, and arrived almost immediately. He was DRT (dead, right there.)

The affore mentioned heat tabs collected by the FAA, revealed he had neglected his fabric by flying too hot, and not taking it out of service.

Yeah that's hard to imagine being as how they are up in the air.

I just wonder if the fire sucks all the air out of their lungs and then goes down in the lungs, like when a door is opened in a house fire and the fire sucks the air out and then engulfs the room. I could see that killing them instantly.

That would be the only way my arse didn't jump out.
