while true, we've struggled to replace some guys as they have gotten older. And it has really hurt us the last 2 years. We still havent fully revamped our WR corps to what it should be.

in its heyday each guy had a role, and they were really good at it. We have guys to "fill" the roles, but they aren't nearly as good as what they were in 09-12. Must upgrade.

Of course putting some talent back into the line helps too, because that has gone to shite compared to what it once was, too.

Interesting discussion. God points on both sides. But I think I come down on the side of the OP. Brees will elevate whomever we put out there. Ingram, Khiry, and Spiller will do the rest.

As anyone thought that they are happy with what they have? Perhaps Jones and Coleman have progressed a lot and they feel Toon is ready to step up. I can't see them trading pass catchers with no confidence in what they have, especially since it didn't seem like a draft priority.

Nope, it's definitely RB.

Edit: you said "among", my bad.

years ago when Brees was at his peak, I'd agree. But last year it was pretty obvious WRs were really struggling to get open, which makes Brees have to fit balls into insanely tight windows, and often resulting in interceptions. You need talent at the WR position

Payton directly said they didn't let anyone go without a replacement in hand(or in mind).

Looking at that the only guy I don't see a comparable replacement for that we lost is Stills(unless we are counting Morgan or Saunders but I don't find them as versatile). Everyone else we had someone on the team or brought someone in.

That said, perhaps they are looking at plugging someone like Toon into that role. He did start coming on last year.

I can understand that take. I am more of the opinion that the pocket collapsed way too often around brees. Took way too much pressure. We ll see.

I disagree the ints were because of the wrs the last two years, which just happen to be Brees' two highest sack totals.

If the line would have held up worth a shite the last two years then the receivers would have had time to get separation. Brees hasn't had time to make reads more often than not.

Just like the lack of pass rush is misplaced on the pass rushers instead of on the LBs and the corners not named Lewis. If you can't stay on a guy for more than two seconds you can't generate a rush.

I agree. He actually had one of the fastest time to throw of his career last year

It's ridiculous how misplaced the blame is because people aren't actually watching the game as a whole. Sacks are down so immediately it's assumed itvs the pass rushers' fault. WR reception numbers are low so it's assumed they can't get separation. There are many factors at play. Look at it as a whole.

From a front 7 perspective, I'd put more blame on DT/NT. Junior was great last year

Not me. Hicks and Walker both got more pressure on the QB this year than last year. Jordan was the only one with a significant drop off in pass rush and that's because he plays on the edge and with power so he needs more than two seconds to get home.

The only issue the line had was letting qbs break contain. Now that was a real issue.

I was thinking more of Jenkins being injured and out of shape. He was a big part of our success in 2013

same thing happened with the pats last year. they had to replace mangold and brady had zero time and zero experienced receivers. the line gelled. brady had time. super bowl.

love our picks this year. the saints have been infrastructure (OL, DL) weak because of those first payton drafts where we went skill position every draft pick.

it's good to get the backbone there, and let one of the most accurate QBs in history find time to find someone.

i feel like colston may have a revival this year, plus cooks is going to make a big sophomore leap...kinda hate the stills trade but i think we'll be okay.

I know that article is a composite of things said but it does point out exactly what I said about us needing a speed guy a hell of a lot more than a size guy (barring getting someone with both).

We have three potential options in the size department aside from Colston. We have one potential option besides Cooks in the speed department (unless Saunders is going to be more than a returner). Plus we have size with the TEs.

It's not just about the number of guys though. Cooks is young and is (essentially) proven. Yes, we need speed behind him, but we don't need a "top of the chart" guy in his role. For the "size" guys we have Colston (proven/old), and then a bunch of totally unproven guys. You're talking about banking on Toon, Jones or Coleman to become the top WR option in the passing game. Just risky business IMO.
