Considering the Saints inability to stop the opposing team from converting 2, no.

I would have gone for 2 if it were under 3 minutes or so. The thing with going for 2 with 6 minutes left is it puts the Saints in a position where (if the Panthers score on their next possession) they have to run the ball 3 times to make the Panthers use their TO's and get the ball back. They do that, stop us and they have an opportunity to win with a FG. Whereas we make it an 8 point game and they go down and tie, we have our entire playbook to go win the game instead of playing it safe and run the clock out

I wanted them to go for it bc I feel
Like we NEVER stop a 2 point attempt for some reason. So no matter what they were gonna tie us.

You go up 9, game over

Hindsight is 20/20 but at the time I thought it was a respectable choice to go for 2.

We never stop them because the refs never call pick plays at the goal line.

i would have gone for it on 4th down in the 1st half instead of trying a 53 yarder with Lutz.

This. That was the point where we lost the momentum.

Depends on how much time is left. No way with 5:00 minutes left. Maybe with 1:58 left.

That's the perfect time to go for two. The odds of them putting two scoring drives together without the saints scoring in that time frame are slim to none. Going for two would've been the smart thing to do in this case because there would've been no way that they could tie the game with one score. We also hadn't stopped them inside the five all game so their 2 pt conversion was effortless but they wouldn't have gone for it if the regular extra point would tie it.

By the same logic, their 2 point conversion was effortless, the Saints could have been trailing on the last possession.

People who say "they wouldn't have gone for it" forget what happened with Oakland or something?

This was a desperate Carolina team who moved the ball on us with ease while their defense couldn't generate a sustainable pass rush. Hell yeah I'd go for it.

That is also a reason NOT to go for it.

They were getting some hits and pressure on Brees actually, but that is also a reason to NOT go for it, assuming your offense will, at worst, get the ball back in a tied game.

I think we did the right thing. We went out and couldn't get the look we wanted.

Taking the 8 point lead is the "right" call.
Is it though? I have a feeling statistical analysis would actually support going for it.

Not blaming Payton at all, but I think the raw numbers would show going for it is the "right" call

The answer is hell no every freaking time. This is football 101. I don't care how you try to rationalize it, you make it an 8-point game and make the other team have to make a 2-point conversion just to tie. Every freaking time!

Ok, here's my thoughts:

At first I was thinking to go for two. Why? I trust Brees to get a 2 point conversion more than I do our defense to stop Carolina from scoring a two point conversion.

Then I realized why CSP opted to go up 8. Because let's say we decided to go for two and didn't get it. Then we'd be up 7. When Carolina scored, they absolutely would've gone for two instead of the tie. Why?

1) Our defense sucks. The odds of scoring a two point conversion on us are pretty high, plus their kicker had already missed an extra point just a few minutes prior.

2) The Panthers were 1-4. They have a shot to win the game and desperately needed the win. On the road against a bad defense, you go for two.

3) The Raiders had just done the same thing to us so it was clear that no one respects our defense.

By kicking the extra point and going up by 8, CSP guaranteed that we could not lose with Carolina scoring on their last possession. They could tie us- which they did- but they couldn't take the lead.

I'm not sure that it is still football 101 in today's NFL, especially with our defense, the defense we were playing, and their offense
