We are up 37-30, and Payton momentarily has the Offense out there to go for 2, giving us a 9 point lead if we get it.

Instead, he opts for the extra point and takes the 8 point lead.

Taking the 8 point lead is the "right" call. You make them go for the TD and Two Pointer, instead of them either being able to "easily" tie it or Raider you.

However...going for 2 would be a ballsy move. It makes it a two score game and would be a very aggressive move.

What would you do, knowing how our Offense was rolling and how much our D was getting f'd in the a?

I wouldn't have gone for it. I understand both sides, but I'd rather make them have to go for 2.

No absolutely not

I would force them to have score a td and get the conversion

I actually had faith even if they were to do all that our O would still march on them in the final seconds

Their defense was just as bad and sustaining losses as well

And that is the smart, by the book, "correct" thing to do.

I just think an argument can be made for going for 2

Depends on how much time is left. No way with 5:00 minutes left. Maybe with 1:58 left.

I'll put it this way: if we were playing against an opponent that was in the same situation (up by 7 before the extra point attempt with limited time remaining) and I saw them line up to go for 2, I would be shitting myself.

I'm always in favor of doing what makes the other team shite themselves.

Against that secondary?

Sure, why not.

You're basically betting on your offense vs your defense. With the way we get called on PI's and our secondary was depleted, i was ready to put the game on the offense's shoulders.

I think if you have a play you're extremely confident in, you do with our offense.

If you go out there, and don't get the look you want, you don't.

My thoughts exactly. You make your call(s), and if you do not have the match-up you are confident in you move on for the kick. The only question I have is, do you take the TO or just roll the dice on your kicker making a 38 yard XP? I think this is where I would have handled it different. If they didn't get me the look I wanted I would have lined up to see if I can get them to jump and just accepted the 5 yard penalty.

absolutely not. make them score a TD and get the 2 point conversion.

if you go for 2 and don't get it then you leave the oakland situation on the table and they can go for two and the win should they score

I actually think the time left in the game made this call for me. If memory serves me the Saints scored with just over 6 minutes left in the game and the Panthers still had 3 timeouts.

With 6 minutes left I like the decision to kick and force Carolina to essentially make two plays a touchdown and then a 2Pt conversion which they did.

Had the time been under 4 minutes I think I could have gone for the 2pts. The difference is that under 4 minutes I feel like I had a legit chance to give Brees one play to put the game out of reach.

With 6 minutes there was a good chance that Carolina could have scored, missed the 2 pt conversion and then used their TOs on defense and got the ball back with a minute to go only needing a FG to win it.

By that same thought process if Lutz had a 50 yard FG with 2 minutes to play if we were up 8 I would let him try it. Up 7 and I put them deep.

Well, we could have elected to have the ball placed at the one yard line because of the roughing the passer penalty on the TD.

Going for 2 up 7 from the 1 yard line should be a no brainer, imo.

This was probably in the back of their minds, and part of why they bailed on the play. You really give yourself an advantage being up by 9 though...

i would have gone for it on 4th down in the 1st half instead of trying a 53 yarder with Lutz.

They couldn't use the penalty to do this. It could only have been enforced on the kick off

How efficient have we been to stop 2pt conversions this year?
