He's been getting compliments and hasn't had bad things said about him so far in practice, and he has held off all the younger talent(I mean he was still ahead of JG when he was playing Jack; unless you think Junior's going to suck that's saying a little something).

From all indications and watching some of the highlights(not his highlights but practice highlights in general) he seems to be doing fine.

He's not going to be the wrecking ball picking up 15 sacks but he pushes the pocket in and keeps working. He'll get pressure. If JG and the d-line can do even a little bit than the rush unit as a whole will be fine and good things have been said about both.

I think run d will be the bigger problem for our defense. Everyone is so worried about the rush but a bad run d will allow the offense to keep you off balance all game and take the teeth out of the pass rush. If we can step that up I think we'll do good things.

I agree, I think him losing the weight will vastly improve his ability to stop the run. Only liability he can present is if the original play called dictates he is rushing the passer/playing containment, but then the QB calls an audible or maybe the HB moves over into the slot and he has to play coverage. He doesn't have to play like Revis, but he has to at least be there to make a tackle or try to bat a pass down. LBs have to be able to cover and press, if they can only do one they should not be in that position. Again, I hope he works out, we don't have the fortune to be picky anymore at LB, especially if Ingram continues running them all over.

Amen.

the D hit rock bottom last year.

but they did collect some turnovers that helped make the final record 7-9 more than most will acknowledge though.

people bitched about the lack of turnovers in 2010 yet the D still finished as a top unit. The record was about what you would expect too. Yet it was the pass rush that everyone keyed on as a weakness.

in 2011, the run defense wasn't all that bad yet the Saints weren't that good stopping the pass. I mean pick and choose your poison. There will always be something to bitch about defensively.

Whoa now. You can't go around refuting message board narratives like that!

To be fair about Will Smith, I think he gets held every play.

IMO the key to his success/failure there is the weight. If he's still pushing 275+, I can't see this working. But if he's gotten down to say 260 or below, I think he could actually contribute. If it weren't for the injuries, I think he could have been more of a contributor at 34 DE personally spelling Cam Jordan.

For someone who sucks and is average (Bountyhunter said that) to be 13th on the active sack leaders list isn't too bad I'd say (LINK ).

I hope all of our average or sucky players pan out like Will Smith (but make less money).

I've been pretty critical of the move and thought it made much more sense to use Smith in a rotation as a 3-4 DE. It's one of the reasons I liked the switch so much and thought it made a lot of sense.

But reading your link and your thoughts on his potential at OLB have really given me a new perspective on it.

I'm still not completely convinced, but I'm definitely more excited about his potential and looking forward to see how it all plays out.

Thanks a lot for a really well thought out and insightful post

You have to add the sacks, hits, and hurries together and see how often they get pressure per pass rush snap.

Will Smith played a ton of snaps, very little sacks... racked up a few qb hurries due to sheer volume of on field action IMO. He lacks a assortment of pass rushing moves, doesn't overpower many tackles and is slow in coverage. He's going to be a 1 yr bandaid this year, i'm not expecting a disaster of a season from him but not anything special neither for his salary.

@pat I knew you would.

@tiger voodoo I'm not sold on him being the answer but I think he can be above average or at least the best of what we have outside of Galette and maybe Wilson.

He's definitely more of a complete player than the others even if his skills are more diminished.

@chad So did Jordan (he played even more snaps) but they finsihed pretty equal in all those things combined. I think Smith actually has a better pressure rating per snap than him.

Though this is not to say Smith is great or even good as Jordan was a run stuffing end. But he is by no means an Ellis type player like some people claim.

When he came out of Ohio State, he had the 40 time to play LB.

Hopefully Will shed enough weight to get back somewhere close (4.49 pre-draft) to that speed.

i've been known to down jordan a time or two so don't expect me to come running to his defense either although like you said, its understood jordan is more of a bookend 3-4 non pass rushing type end unlike will getting paid big bucks for his qb pressure.

Serious question: how much are olbs expected to drop into coverage in the 3-4? Is Smith capable of covering a RB?

I believe it was said in Dallas last season the Sam dropped into coverage about 1/5 of the time and the Jack about 1/10 of the time.

It's not too often, but Smith will have to cover a good bit throughout the year as a whole. Usually though it's an under zone and not man to man so that's a positive.

I think I have watched just about every game Smith has played and have a couple of points.

The harshness of the criticism was mainly due to his performance vs salary.
Getting to the outside vs the run has been terrible the last few years. I don't see how he can play 3-4 OLB with his lack of speed as a every down kinda player but we'll see. I would not be surprised if he came in on passing downs only.
As to the high number of 'hits' on the qb's I totally agree. 'Cause he never GETS THERE ON TIME.
He has the most 'almost sacks' in the league. And he's been very consistent at that the last several years.
I do very much wish him success this year and I can enjoy a fine plate of fried crow.
