And just to be clear, I'm not downplaying the importance of players that can "take the top off" of defenses, but possession receiver is almost used as a pejorative at times. It would be very hard (at least off the top of my head) to come up with a posseion duo like Colston and Moore that has put up the same type of numbers. They just produce.
Oh I agree. If anything, possession receivers are more important in this offense specifically because of our unique type of ball control via mostly passing instead of pounding the ball. I also feel like having a guy who can tear down the field for Brees to find off PA is a staple in this offense that when its clicking, is damn hard to beat. That said, if all you can do is speed down the field, then you're really not very useful in this offense. Look at Morgan, he only caught like 10 damn balls all year. If you can't make key catches to keep drives alive, you're not of much use to this team IMO
I don't think it is.
Our WR corps is not exactly elite.
I mean, look what happens when our receivers go to other teams.
Meh. I see what you're saying. But I still hate how easily players accomplishments in the league get belittled. You can point to Meachem failing last year in San Diego I guess. But I'd be willing to be that Colston and Moore would be very solid if they moved on somewhere else. Brees is obviously one of the best in the game, but even he needs a little help from the receivers every once in awhile.
Colston putting up as many 1000 yard seasons as he has isn't a fluke.
