hat being said, it would be ideal to trade back and get him midway through the 2nd round, but still have a 2nd to get someone else like Matthews, Moncrief, etc.

Id be shocked if he makes it out of the first

Martin would help with the zone running too. I've watched him a bit on youtube. Not a highlight film but just every offensive snap against some team. He's real athletic, but sometimes he get's too far down field too quick (because a lot of the times, centers have the responsibility of getting to the 2nd level and taking out linebackers) and has trouble locating his man.

That's actually not a terrible point that you make there. An even stronger running game would then help open up the passing game more.
Thanks. I really think it would especially help the play action where Stills, Morgan(if healthy), and Meachem(if he makes it again) could wreak havoc.

And it would cause teams to have to respect the run in general and we wouldn't see as many cover 2 and cover 3 looks. The last 2 years I don't think teams have played hardly any cover 1 or cover 0 against us.

All about that. Much better than trading up in the 1st for Beckham or Cooks.

I also agree that it would be best to trade back about 10-15 spots and then take Martin. Then trade up with our other second and take Matthews.

But that's dependent on who's still there at 27.

We have enough WRs and CBs to get by this year and could address that position in next years draft or free agency. That being said, it would be ideal to trade back and get him midway through the 2nd round, but still have a 2nd to get someone else like Matthews, Moncrief, etc.

Exactly. Especially if we can trade back a few picks and get a 5th or a 4th, I would not be mad at all.

There are enough second round WRs I like to grab a Center in the first.

I'm just hoping someone get's antsy and trades up to our spot for Carr or Bridgewater if there isn't good value at the spot. What would be cool is if the 49ers trades up with a team that needs a QB, and then that team trades up with us so we'll still have a 1st round pick.

I've been seeing mocks I've hated the looks of with what's left at or near our pick, but the NFL Network live mock would be the best case scenario for us.

Lee and Roby are both gone before us so I don't have to sweat them(but they were both in reach if we want them). Mosley went at 21 to the Packers so we could trade up with maybe Miami if we really wanted him. Beckham went to the Eagles at 22 so he fell pretty far.

Shazier, Verrett, and Cooks are still on the board at 25.

Verrett just went 25th meaning at least one of Shazier and Cooks will be available.

Bridgewater at 26 so both are available. Bet they pick Cooks for us.

Eisen picked Cooks for us but said he did consider Shazier.

That's the game I watched. He anchored very well against him. Sometimes as part as a double team. Sometimes one on one.

This is my problem with people who say "Not in the first". You can't tell me if Martin is a 10 year Pro Bowl starter that anchors your line isn't worth a first.

Diamond in the rough... Apart from that, you go for the guys that can impact you the most, year one, in the 1st. You do not want a rookie center in your starting line-up, so everyone saying he is a developmental pick is absolutely correct.

I don't know crap about the kid and if he is legit but a player like that improves the whole lines performance from running game to pass protection.

He's a starting O-lineman in a, historically, weak defensive conference. He hasn't been tested that much either. The one game last year that he was (Stanford) he was somewhat abused. I urge anyone that is taking this kid seriously as a 1st rounder, much less a 1st-year starter, to watch the game and tell me you don't see what I see. Hit or miss, especially on the technical side of things. Can it be taught? Yes, but that takes time and I don't think he'll be ready game one.

quote:

Let's slow down and stop acting it's the same as drafting a punter.

I'd take a kicker in the 1st if he was a sure thing at 55 yards every time. Is that realistic? No, but it's about as realistic as what you are suggesting.

I'm still getting that bad USC lineman taste outta my mouth, won't say his name, but it rhymes with Charles Brown.....

At this point, I'm hoping we trade our pick to absolutely own the second day. IMHO, I feel like the wr's being projected in the 2nd-3rd rounds will be more impactful than those in the first. Allen Robinson, Jarvis, and Matthews are my favorites besides Watkins. I think we get our center and rb in the 3rd after a trade.

Offensive Lineman should not be taken in the first round unless you have a top 15 pick

However, this guy is different. A real diamond in the rough. But if there are a lot of WRs that go off the board in the 1st then I think there will be better players available like Mosley or Dennard

Martin is rated by most "experts" as the best C in the draft; this isn't saying much as this is an off year for that position. Martin's claim to fame is his upper body strength, but he has holes in his game...like 2 or 3 other guys right behind him. So, do you give up a 1st rounder for Martin when you can get a guy like Swanson in 4th or Stork in the 6th/7th round? Most probably not.

The more I read about Stork the more I see "Sean Payton" written all over him.

I would have no problem with a trade down to get Martin in the second and acquire picks. Although I really think the Saints are going to get a center in a later round.
