If someone were to ask me would you accept the position your team is in now for one taste of a Super Bowl season, I would 100/100 times. This team under Payton has been the best years of the Saints in the history of the franchise.

But the window so many of us thought was cracked open has been slammed shut tonight. And it's not about a preseason game, but seeing how bad we are across the board. Our starters and our backups are getting beat up and down the field. The coaching staff has no fire. The players are sloppy, committing bad penalties and going through the motions.

I'm not sure what you do with Brees. I'll always love the man for all he's done, but why pay him what he wants when this team has major holes everywhere, and won't be able to address them with a massive contract to a star on the wrong side of 35?

I'll enjoy the season because I love football, but the window has closed on this franchise under Payton. If we are as bad as I think we will be, I hope it's high enough to select Deshaun Watson from Clemson, and inject some youth and excitement into the franchise.

It sucks, but the sun sets on everyone.

Never change, Zombie.

Stay Gold, ponyboy.

Goodell painted the window shut in 2011. We've been unsuccessfully trying to pry it open since then.

I usually don't comment on these types of things but you are right in some things. I remember the 2009-2011 years when we'd play our preseason games. Our 2nd and 3rd units used to be really exciting to watch. That's the difference between the current teams and those teams. We were so much better 1-53 than a lot of teams in the league.

Goodell certainly screwed us, but we've had a while now to get it right and we've made terrible decisions combined with bad luck. Add poor drafting to the mix and you see the product we saw tonight.

Exactly. That's how I knew those Saints teams were special. The starting unit would run down the field, but the backups would come in and also play at a high level, and many times really establish themselves as better than other teams' backups.

It reminds me of the days of old when the Saints starters would be pulled and preseason games became unwatchable

Injuries too. So damn many of them. Do these boys stretch during the offseason?

Maybe it has something to do with the CBA and less contact in practice now. Also guys trying to pull up because of some of the nit pic penalties these days.

We went 2-2 in 2010 and 2011 and got smoked by Houston and Tennessee.

The one thing that is so hard to watch is the fall of the offense. I can't remember a time under SP,up until the last couple of years, when we hoped the offense could move the ball. We were always surprised if there was a mistake. It was as close to perfection as an offense could be. It was a moment in time that i don't think we'll see on this team again. I won't say we won't ever win another SB but to see a team excute an offense the way we did is something to behold. This is why i will always appreciate what Brees and SP has done, because it was so exceptionally rare.

I always try to be optimistic, but you make some good points Zombie. I'm worried that the Saints are returning to what they were during the majority of the Haslett years, a mediocre 7-9 or 8-8 football team. The Saints aren't an awful team, I mean, since Mike Ditka, the Saints have only had one awful season, and that was the Katrina season in 2005.

The defense is actually showing some good signs from what I've seen thus far. One unit that really needs to improve for this team to have any kind of chance is the offensive line. Give Brees enough time and he will get the job done. That and the team staying healthy of course.

I'm gonna stay optimistic, as a Saints fan, that's really all we can do is just hope for the best.

A fun to watch team that goes to the playoffs?

I'll take it. There have been much worse times.

Should I get the bag out? I haven't followed the pre season and from the look of these threads I'm really worried

Yep. 'Twas time to move on from Payton last season. Need a new voice in the locker room tbh. Peyton is probably a top 5 coach. But has run his course here.

I agree. The Payton/Brees era is coming to a close but it will always be the greatest partnership this team will ever see for more reasons than just football. They brought home a Lombardi trophy but, more importantly, they injected life into a dying city after Katrina.

This team's problems aren't caused by Brees...hell, the guy on the other line of scrimmage, Roethlisberger, makes more than Brees and the Steelers are still in the hunt for championships. No, the real problems lie in the front office. Mistakes in the draft and high dollar 2nd contracts and free agents who contributed zero on the field has caused cap hell with nothing to show for it.

I have mixed emotions on the Brees extension situation. On one hand, I want him here but really think the money could be better spent rebuilding the team. The reality is that I'm not sure this front office won't piss the money away like they have done so often.

Mickey Loomis is the only problem. Sean Peyton has this team in playoff contention year in and year out with a talent deficient roster.

You're one of those people that thinks Mickey Loomis runs our scouting department and then drafts all the players?
