1(8). Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
The Saints need help on every level of their defense. That includes the front line, where Cameron Jordan is the only edge player who can consistently generate pressure on the opposing quarterback. Jordan is actually having an All-Pro-caliber year, but New Orleans has to add a potent player across from him to rattle Matt Ryan, Cam Newton and Jameis Winston. Derek Barnett, who has enjoyed a prolific 2016 campaign, would project to generate a great pass rush.
2. Raekwon McMillan, LB, Ohio State
I still can't believe the Saints signed James Laurinaitis. Did they not watch how horrible he was for the Rams? Seriously, what were they thinking?
3. Jamar Summers, CB, Connecticut
When the Saints released Keenan Lewis in the offseason, it was pretty evident that they would have issues at cornerback this season, and that has turned out to be the case. They need an upgrade across from Delvin Breaux so they can stop starting the likes of B.W. Webb.

We're so desperate for a vocal leader defensively (ones that actually plays)...

they thought, how can we help our D since Anthony is a liability in our eyes?
dude.. lets go get Laurinaitis!!
we can sell the fact we needed a veteran LB all along.
Anthony just needs more time to develop.
we'll pick a corner in Round 1 next year anyway!
We're good!

sure those guys help, but the team desparately needs o lineman.

True, but you can still get a good O-Lineman in the 4th round to go along with one in free agency. That being said...I hope we get an OL in the 3rd at the latest as well.
I'm not familiar with the guys in the 2nd & 3rd round, but Barnett falling in our laps is the best case scenario for us at the moment. I'll take those 3 positions all day...assuming we address OL as well.

Barnett-Rankins-Fairley-Jordan up front with Kikaha healthy to rush the passer?

Any combination of DE, LB, and CB in the first three rounds is a win and a must. Use free agency to shore up the o line and grab some veteran depth, especially at cornerback

If we can resign Fairley I don't think we need to go DL in the first. I'd rather a corner or linebacker

If Barnett falls I'd run to the podium. Him and Jordan would wreck shite for years. They're actually pretty similar in that while they both won't put up 20 sacks, they both rush the passer and defend the rush very well. A guy like Myles Garrett will get run over his first couple years in the league.

Honestly... Imagine if we drafted Barnett and hit on that pick, plus resigned Fairley.
Jordan-Rankins-Fairley-Barnett
Edebali-Davison-Onyemata-Tapp(Kruger)
....Would be absolutely INSANE up front.

Yea, you can't pass on Barnett imo. I'd even trade up to get him if the price was reasonable. He would complete our line and make things much easier on the LB's & DB's. He's so safe of a pick compared to the DE's in the 2nd round & a legit DE in free agency would cost way too much. Barnett is a perfect fit for us.
The caliber of CB's in the 2nd round is absurd. We would be in a perfect situation to take a 1st round talent that falls to our 2nd round pick.

Raekwon McMillan is a hard-hitting, QB of the defense type of linebacker. The knock on him is he isn't great (not bad though) in pass protection. He's been compared to Jonathan Vilma and 2nd round Ohio State draft picks seem to be working out well for us.

Sounds good to me. I assume we sign a RG in free agency, then probably either a CB or LB as well. We can easily afford 2 big money guys. Whichever position we don't fill via free agency(CB or LB), the 2nd round would be perfect to acquire the other position.
Then use the 3rd & 4th round to get an OT & RB. Seems like the safest and most effective way to acquire all our needs.

I'm not sold on needing defense in the first round. I would rather draft Cam Robinson than reach on a defensive player.

Barnett is not even close to a reach at 8 lol

You'd rather draft a T to play at G than a surefire game changer to finally have someone to help Jordan?

It may just be me, but I think it's way more prudent to get a fa cb who has proven he can transition to the nfl...

I definitely agree that CB is a bigger need than OT. Hopefully the FO makes the right decision when it comes to LB & CB. We have to get a RG in free agency & we might only be able to afford one more big money free agent. You can make a case for both LB & CB...I wouldn't have a problem going either direction though. I just like the 2nd round CB's.
