The sky is falling! Or is it...

"Sometimes when you're playing a good offense, man, you've just gotta be able to survive it. We understand this team's gonna move the ball up and down the field some. They're gonna have some success because they're good. But you want to win on third down when you can, and when you're in the red zone we've got to get some field goals. And we won the plays that we needed to." -Harper

Fact is Houston is one of the best overall teams and we still won. Our offense started to click (once we pulled Eric Olsen) and our defense came up with the stops when they needed to.

Everyone talks about how good Houston is in their zone block running game and it's no surprise Foster and Tate(especially when Foster went down) have both done very well. It's no surprise to see them do well against us with it. Even still, we were able to get some stops and a couple of stuffs.

Johnson is one of the best WRs in the league so it's no surprise to see him do well. I will say I had my concerns with Lewis before with some plays in the previous games and this only upped those concerns a little but it isn't like this was against a scrub receiver. I have hopes he can be a decent cover guy but he may need safety help from time to time against the better receivers.

Outside of those 2 spots(and thankfully we won't play against teams that run zone blocking nearly to that level) the overall defense was pretty good. 5-12 on 3rd down and 0-2 on 4th down with 2-5 red zone is a pretty good defensive day.

We already know we don't have the best D in the league but we don't need the best D to win games. All we need is stops.

We score TDs, they score FGs, we win.

I definitely think that this defensive scheme fits our players better than Spagnuolo's did, but we can't know either way right now. I like the things that were done, but I don't believe we have the depth or the talent right now to be a top 20 defense. There is reason for optimism. I think that we have some really good young talent in Vaccaro and Jordan. I also think Hicks and John Jenkins have good upside and will at least be legitimate starters in this league with a chance to become really good players. I think Lewis will be fine once he gets used to the system and gets some playing time under his belt with this team. The good news is that once Wilson and Gallette gets back we'll be better, and once this team gets a few games under its belt we could be respectable. There are so many good teams in the league that I don't think it's likely that we will win it all, but we certainly have a shot.
We just need to keep drafting well and upgrade the linebacker position in the offseason if Gallette or Wilson do not pan out.

I think that was the thing that hurt us the most, and the subsequent play action that came off of it. It's tough to defend.

I was meh on the defensive performance. I was down when we have up the long drive, then i was up when we forced FGs, but then i was down when their 2s drove the field on our 1s. I think we just have to remember what role injuries play and keep our expectations realistic as this defense figures out its identity.

Fox displayed an interesting stat regarding the Texans defense: When Cushing was out their D was not nearly has good (displayed stats to show it). We have no idea what we will look like with Tez and Jr in the game. Can only be better, right?

That didn't happen. The Saints were pulling guys early into the 2nd. The Texan 1s played the whole first half.

maybe we put in a couple of 2s, but most of our 1s were out there when their 2s drove

What part of "The Texan's played their 1's the whole first half" don't you understand?

Sad thing is, because of that one drive, people forget about all the other good things they did.
People also tend to forget that this is the NFL. The opposing team is going to score points. To throw a hissy fit because the opposing starting team put together ONE TD drive the entire first quarter is just unreasonable. It was actually pretty great considering the Texans have one of the best offenses in the entire NFL.
Not to mention they forced long FGs that I don't think most kickers would have made. That dude Bullock had a beast of a leg

What concerns me is giving up 496 yards of offense, and being ran on consistently. I know it's preseason, so I'll take the wait and see approach.

"I'll take the wait and see approach."

I hear ya and agree with you, but going into preseason, the refrain was "just be decent on defense and we will be OK." Now, I wonder if we're getting a little greedier. Sure, the D was far from great yesterday, but they did force sorme FG attempts (including some LONG ones) and the Saints did win the "1's vs. 1's" even though Houston played their starters the whole first half. Given how good Houston is, I lean toward optimism.

add injuries and new D Coord and dramatically new scheme... we'll only get better.

unless of course injuries get worse [knocks on wood].

Why does yardage concern you? Again, would you rather give up yards or points?

This is the whole reason I don't buy into the worst d of all time last year bull shite. We gave up the most yards all time but not the most points all time. I don't even think we gave up the most points last year.

Yards are great for fantasy players but the scoreboard is the ONLY thing that matters and yesterday it said we won. We did something right to win without having to score 28+(could have won with 27).

And with Brees I think we have a good shot to average at least 28 points.
