Sorry, bad wording. I mean if Brees died right now and they had to put a guy in, I'm sure they would be fine with it being Grayson. I didn't mean they would be FINE, just that they would be fine with playing him over McCown in that particular scenario.
But while Brees is active and kicking, we gain nothing by playing Grayson in any scenario. The kid needs time.

You do know it doesn't get hardly any cheaper for the backup QB right than basically what we're paying Luke. Especially when you consider the skins he has on wall w our offense

You have a very talented backup already on the roster.
We are missing starters and his skins are 1 game. The same amount of time Drew has missed in 10 years.

Sure would have been nice to grab an OG in the 3rd instead of Grayson.

Proves we pissed away our 3rd rd pick on a QB...

He's our field goal holder too
Also, look at this like baseball. Going into camp, Garrett is our long relief, Luke is our closer. It's Garrett's job to win that 2 spot from Luke.
Let's say they play even through camp and preseason. Well, if something were to happen to Drew in game 3, season long injury... it's GG18 all season. It's too early in the game, bring in the long relief, let's see what we have. Nothing to lose.
But if you get into week 14, and the playoffs are on the line, you bring in the closer, and try to win the damn thing.
I've seen Garrett at the Las Vegas Bowl, and the Senior Bowl.. you guys just aren't seeing it yet. I've said it multiple times, this kid with 2 healthy years of muscle building and system learning is going to be better than good. Paxton Lynch's medicals are terrifying to me. I'd have GG18 as my 3rd QB this year, and feel like I was stealing getting him in the 3rd. The value is there. You guys will see.
This deal for Luke is for 2 years. Is any of that telling? I don't know. Leaves year 4 of GG18's rookie deal to himself. How crazy would it be to see Drew extended only 1 year. Put the writing on the wall, and then still try to get something of value for Drew before he is gone?
I want Drew retiring as a Saint, in 3 or 4 years.... but at some point we should see what this kid has.
Good move for the Saints, leaves lots of options open. We sit back and wait to see how the Brees extension will go or not go.

2)Brees needs a vet set of eyes - this is why we have Mccown and insisted on getting Flynn when Mccown went down. I think the team might be comfortable if Brees died right now throwing Grayson in there, but if we're talking about Brees being the starter and needing someone to help him assess what he's seeing on the field when he comes to the sideline, I'm more comfortable with it being a vet like Mccown who has been in the league for a long arse time
This is why and there's no other reason to it.
There are reasons some of these players are career backups for decades, because they know the game.
Yes "QB Coach" has that job and so do many others, but the job of a backup QB is also to observe the game from the sideline (same as to what Brees was doing FOR McCown v Carolina). You're going to put a 2nd year guy who's essentially still learning? We've always had a vet behind Brees to do this, even when we had a guy in the wing. Also of course the primary job, just incase Brees goes down you want someone who's able to save you a few times. McCown almost did and the 1.5mil we're shelling out for him doesn't hurt us if its ultimately helping Brees avoid throwing a dumb pick he's prone to.
2006-2007: Jamie Martin
2008-2009: Mark Brunell
2010-2012: Chase Daniel (beat out Patrick Ramsey)
2013-present: Luke McCown
all multi-year vets or beat out a vet (Daniel) as Brees' backup

You realize the player has to agree to the extension right?

BTW there's no guarantees in Luke's deal besides the 500K signing bonus.
