They shouldn't be lethargic to preseason.

Anyone watching the defense in preseason last year knew we were screwed.

Yeah, there wasn't much optimism last year during TC.

A lot of people thought the team looked the worst they'd seen.
I haven't seen this much praise for the defense in a long time.

Agreed.

If nothing else, it is good to see some spirit. Maybe some real leaders are stepping up.

Also, just listened to your podcast from ~3 weeks ago with Ralph Malboro Red. Y'all were talking about athleticism in our draft. Check out the SPARQ scores of our draft picks. Thomas is 82nd percentile. Onyemata is 96.3rd percentile. Lasco is 98.1st percentile. Rankins is 83.3rd percentile. Bell is the only subpar athlete (3.7), but S is more of a mental position. That's why you frequently see 35 year old future HoF CB's try to extend their career at S.

That's good information.

Is SPARQ data free or is it like PFF?

I think they just started making the results widely known this past draft. I haven't done a ton of digging into exactly what it means, just know that it's a seemingly legit consolidation of physical prowess.
https://3sigmaathlete.com/rankings/

Also, we saw how talent can trump physicality in training camp.

Lasco TRUCKED Bell, and that gets all the talk, but the big thing is that Bell held on and made a good open field tackle, even though he "got pwned lol." Bell was the only guy in the area. Who gives a shite if he gave up an extra 3 yards vs. holding him up?

It is early but this draft could be really nice.

True, could have been a TD.

Preseason is always fun for the diehards thrill.... For the people that care about the WHOLE 53 man roster and not just the superstars, it is a time to be excited

No need to be ashamed about it

ETA: between lasco and Murphy, I think only one of them makes the team, which sucks because I think Murph is explosive and I really like the highlights I've seen of lasco

The good news is that both Murphy & Lasco can be stashed on the practice squad. Murphy played every game last year, but I think the rule is that you have to play 2 years to be ineligible.

Sucks but expected since Lasco was drafted. If Spiller is finally ready to roll, Hightower coming on strong to end 2015, and Ingram being a borderline probowler...Lasco, Murphy, Cadet were pitted against each other from the beginning for 1 spot.

Best case scenario is we keep Lasco, sign Murphy to PS, and wave bye to Cadet.

Unless Murphy fixed his fumbling issues, there's no way he makes the team. If Spiller makes it (I expect him to), then he needs to be handling punt returns. He was excellent at it in 2010/11. For some reason he hasn't done it since.

Lasco IMO has higher upside. Murphy was returner by default. If Tommy Lee Lewis or RJ Harris can make the team at WR5 they will match/surpass all Murph's ST value and Lasco might be a better all around RB.

I think that we're a lot more likely to carry 4 RBs vs 5 WRs. I hate saying it as I love his story and respect his grit (typically being reserved for white folk), but Spiller and Lasco way outperforming Hightower in camp and preseason would simplify a lot. Would help us keep an extra CB or S. Plus, to my knowledge, Hightower doesn't play special teams. Both Lasco and Spiller do.

4 HBs and 5 WRs is the standard carry, not including a special teamer.

Very unlikely we carry less at either spot (MAYBE to start that first week but it never holds).

The question is if we carry a 5th HB or 6 WR. Given how week WR is at the bottom I don't see 6. Maybe they try to fit 5 HBs but it'll be hard with all the defensive guys seemingly stepping up (especially in the secondary).

Preseason will sort it out though.

I don't see Spiller returning punts at this point in his career. Could be wrong but I just don't think it will happen.

Who makes the roster is also contingent on which players they think they can get onto the practice squad without losing them. Pretty excited to see plays being made on defense. It can take surprisingly little sometimes to turn team performance around. Our DT tandem goes from a hole to possibly a strength. Byrd no pan out? Bell and Harris have been looking like real deal players. If Laurinaitis can provide the leadership and brains for calling the D without falling off physically, THAT will go a long ways to eradicating many of the basic D problems last year. Playmakers! Here they come!
