We don't have a true NT so he has been our best option in that spot the past two years to draw doubles. While Davison is good, he isn't a true nose and doesn't command the doubles like Rankins has been doing.

Gotta make the defense fit what we have, and until we get that really good NT Rankins will continue to play the role (and hell, he's been a really good NT even if we initially picked him as our 3tech).

Rankins was the one benefiting from playing next to Fairley.

I see what you're saying with the numbers, but they both benefitted from playing next to each other, as Fairley drew his share of doubles also. Davison and Onyemata haven't played well enough to command doubles so Rankins has been taking them every play instead of having some trade off with Fairley.

And you also have to look at competition when judging numbers. Who did Fairley get sacks against before Rankins came back? Who did he get them against with Rankins in the fold?

Just looking at numbers doesn't tell the whole story. Ask pretty much any receiver that played with Brees and then went elsewhere.

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised to see us target a true NT in the 3rd round of the next draft. There are always a few good DT's left in that round. Obviously if Fairley plays in 2018, we probably won't be drafting a DT at all.

I guess we should be pretty critical. Nick Fairley had a great year last year, and it was obvious to everyone because he made tons of plays.

Our interior pass rush was better with Fairley, but we got gashed up the middle a lot more with Fairley/Davison than we do with Rankins/Davison. I literally can't remember one play this year where we got gashed up the middle (we might have, but I don't recall any). I can recall about 4 or 5 big runs against us this year, & all were to the outside.

Fairley got doubled last year, but not as much as Rankins this year (Onyemata & Hendrickson also provide help). I'm not saying that one player is better than the other, but those are the differences between the 2. Hopefully we get Fairley back in 2018 to improve the interior pass rush.

Okafor instead of Kruger also makes this years unit better. Jordan/Rankins/Davison/Okafor has to be one of the best D-Lines in the NFL this year against the run. Okafor has been a pleasant surprise considering he came from a 3-4 defense.

If I was Okafor I would be happy as hell. Get wide on the run and rush the passer. Has to be easier thaqn playing pass coverage in the 3-4.

Okafor has been really good against the run & has 2 sacks so far. If he keeps up this play for the rest of the year, then we'll probably want to re-sign him in the offseason. Hopefully he likes it here & accepts our offer. A DE that can stop the run & provide an average pass rush will probably get some nice offers in free agency.

So he's getting triple teamed?

We've been begging for this.

Cam finally has someone who necessitates double teams at the tackle position. And he's thriving off of it.

Then a team tries to double Cam and Rankins bulls his way up the middle. It's awesome.

Tyeler Davison 4th highest graded interior lineman in W6 behind Kenny clark, Aaron Donald, and Ashawn. Deserves mention

It really is a shame that nobody besides Saints fans even know about this guy.

I won't say that I know for sure how well Rankins has been doing, but I will say that tackles are a horrible metric to rate defensive tackles.

i haven't really did any "dvr study" of rankins but i sure hope all the fans proclaiming the "he must be double teamed ever snap" theory has credible evidence and intelligence to just assume and claim that. i've seen rankins get destroyed in 1 on 1's and pushed 5 yards off the LOS at times.

He still has some work to do to reach his full potential, but for some reasons NFL OC's are choosing to double him & our interior run defense is as strong as it's ever been. His biggest weakness is lack of size, obviously. Give him a couple more years before making a final judgement. If he doesn't improve his overall game in that time, then you have every right to question him.

He's still a DT that has played less than a full season.
