He's more of a hybrid LB/S than a true safety which is a position becoming more common in the NFL. Jabril Peppers from this past draft is the prototype for that role. Mark Barron and Cam Chancellor also play similar roles to that.

It allows us to set up in nickel for our base set and the majority of snaps. If that is the game plan going forward in future years I don't know if finding another hybrid type player is that easy.

He can make plays when he's in the right role. I can't see paying him huge money though. Good money but not huge.

I have struggled with this thought, but Malcolm Jenkins is a great example to go off of in my mind. He showed flashes of brilliance, was defensive captain, streaky play and was often in position to make the big plays but rarely converted.. Let him go looking for greener pastures, Malcolm excels and has played at pro bowl if not all pro levels.

The Patriots argument is a valid one, don't retain over priced FAs is a good motto. But this defense could use some continuity, and Vaccaro is a starting Strong safety in this league. I think we should pay him as such, nothing crazy, but if you can get him at market value I think we should keep him. He played his arse off last week, and has had some very good games during the streak this season. Has also shown a lot of good tape over the years.

The better he plays the more we'll get for him.

He's great near the LOS when not forced into a true safety role.

I don't see why the coaching staff has to go through the same process every year before putting him where he belongs

Id really like to know what his market value really is. If he really wants the big time money are we sure a team will give it to him?

Ideal situation would be let him see what teams offer and give the Saints a chance to match. I just cant see anyone paying him 8-10 a year but i could be wrong.

Why would anyone give a 3rd round for a FA next year?

This puzzles me as well.

Because you don't have to bid for their services against potentially 31 other teams. And you agree on an extension before making the trade.

That's why these types of trades happen quite often (mostly before/during the draft, and usually at least before the season starts; odds of an actual in season trade are low).

This is the kind of thinking that'll get you the ole Malcolm Jenkins / Jairus Byrd swap out. We thought the same thing - for the money we could do better...set us back years!

There is value that Vaccarro has in running the defense and it's finally working. You guys are fools to want to let him go now.

I don't want Vaccaro to leave, but I also don't want to pay him 9mil a year.

Agreed. Mark Barron got 5/45. Thats probably what we're looking at.

It really wouldn't be like that all.

We let the cheaper option go to give Byrd the largest S contract in the league

If we let Vaccaro go, you can replace him in the draft or with someone already on the roster and save the money.

So if he wants top S money, let him walk. If it's a reasonable deal, keep him

If only there wasn't that salary cap

He is very good at many things but pass coverage is not one of them. I would like him back on the team but I would not break the bank.

Slight correction there.

He's a pretty damn good nickel corner. Yes he still gets beat by faster guys from time to time (but who doesn't?), and guys like Gronk (but who doesn't?), but for the most part he shuts his man down.

He looked horrible those first two games because for some stupid fricking reason Allen was trying to play him like a true safety and he was asked to cover Gronk man to man with no help.

Since he's been back in the nickel/box safety role our defense has completely turned around and now we're on a winning streak.

Snead is a RFA. He'll get tagged at the 2nd round tender and then we'll discuss an extension. I think the 2nd round tender was $1.8 mil a year or two ago, so likely not much more next year.

On Okafor, unless he hits double digit sacks (which seems to be the magic wallet opener for teams) I doubt he sees more than $6 mil per, and that's if he keeps on the pace he's on. He hit 8 sacks before and it didn't help his market this year.

Kelemete, Coleman, Moore, and Bush are all likely to see only minimum to $2 mil per. I don't see any of them on track for more than minimum at this point though.

Daniel is a backup QB do he may command a bit more, but I didn't like what I saw in the preseason and would rather look elsewhere.

Fairley will wind up saving a lot more money when they finally reach a settlement. Possible he'll only be on the books for a very small portion of the signing bonus or maybe not at all.

Fleener is still getting snaps but he seems to be getting phased out recently with Hooman showing he's healthy. Not sure if he's a FA this year but I could see us parting with Fleener, retaining Hooman and Hill, and drafting a TE in the first four rounds.

Strief is a tough one, but we should probably look to move on with the money we can save and put elsewhere. Perhaps another tackle could be taken in the top four rounds. Good RTs can usually be found a little later (but without a third it may have to be a second or trading up/back).

And I don't see Vaccaro getting more than $10 mil, but I see him getting closer to $8.5-9.5 mil.

Brees is a tricky one and we really need to either extend him before FA or let him go as $12 mil jumps on the cap if he hits FA (on top of the $6 mil he's already costing next year).
