Why people think we can take just any 1st round QB and they will automatically be great just because "they will learn under Brees"?

No one said they would automatically be great. I think most people would just feel better about a first round QB who DID learn under one of the GOATs more than they would about a first rounder who didn't... do you not agree?

I don't think they should take a first round QB. But I am certainly in the camp of "try to find the successor in Brees' twilight years and let Brees teach him some tips 'n' tricks"

Not on Watson.

Every year people just pick a 1st round name and plug it into the "under Brees" sentence.

Clearly they think they will be great after being "under Brees". Why else would you draft them?

I have a feeling the next GOAT QB will fall to us at pick 32 in the 2018 draft and Sean won't hesitate to put the call in then.

Well I wasn't talking about Watson specifically, I just meant in general.

I think we're in for a lot of shitty QB play for a lot of years after Brees retires. Enjoy this while it lasts boys.

I'm not convinced Brees will be the best teacher and I know i'm in the minority on this. Just listen to him talk about how long he plans on playing and it seems to me he does not intend on giving that up anytime soon. I just dont think he'll be thrilled to teach anyone unless he is intent on retiring in a year or 2.

I may be really off base but I can see a potential Favre/Rodgers situation... hopefully our next guy wont be a total dickweed like Rodgers

Bottom line is I will take 3-13 for at least a couple years if it means we find a franchise QB. Good QBs are being drafted every year. Our next guy won't be drew Bree's but it's not that difficult to hit on a first round QB. I'd bet for every complete bust drafted in the first round there was two or three franchise QBs drafted in the same draft

I don't know where he is projected to go, or if he's declaring for the draft this year, but Patrick Mahomes would be a guy I wouldn't mind us taking past the 1st round.

This is the key because Brees still sees himself as the starter and wants to play 3-4 more years from this point. So we are talking about the end of 2019 or 2020.

Who is to say what he feels and when. Brees has to call his end date before the process can start. If Brees went to Loomis tomorrow and said I want to play 4 more years then it is feasible that New Orleans could plan for the future by taking a 2nd round QB in the 2018 draft to sit 2 years under Brees knowing that he will be handed the reigns or aa 1st round pick in 2019.

My fear is that New Orleans' best chance to take a a QB might be this year in the top 10. Not in the next 2-3 years with picks in the teens. Now I am not thrilled with this year's crop of QBs. So we will see.

I don't have a problem with taking a QB in the mid rounds for the next few years. I assume we'll use a high pick on one when we feel Brees is on his decline.

We need too much help at OL & defense to use a high pick at this point.

I thought this is what Garrett Grayson is doing?

That was the plan, but he turned out to be a bust. It happens. At least we didn't use a 1st rounder on him.

Brees is not a trainer to those who may replace him. He has said this very fact. Brees will not be on the bench helping the starter and he will not ever help the QB on that bench take his job. He has said this as well.

I listen to the Move the Sticks podcast, it's mainly about scouting. In late September when Carson Wentz was looking pretty good still, Daniel Jeremiah (who used to work as a scout for the Eagles and is very close to the F/O) told a story that was told to him.

He said that Carson Wentz is a student of the game and he has already developed a very good set of study habits. He's first in every day. Wee hours of the morning. Where did he learn it? Chase Daniel. Where did Daniel pick those habits up?

Drew Brees.

I'm not saying that Brees is going to pull out a damn study guide for a young QB underneath him. But just being there, seeing how a true HOF guy operates and competes in camp is going to be good for a young QB. That much is undeniable IMO.
