Should we take the Benson ownership appeal as a serious threat to stability?

I'm not really threatened by the appeal going on, but I'm kind of freaked out that it could snowball.

I am a little wary that the legal proceedings could get ugly and create some distractions in the penthouse of the Saints organization and I hope that it doesn't in any way seep into the football operations.

All in all I'm confident that Mr. Benson will remain in charge of the Saints, keeping Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis on board. However, I'm not above being on board with the Saints cashing in on Sean Payton if they feel they can at the end of the season and starting fresh. But how do you start fresh with Drew Brees?

I would venture to guess that if the Saints do cut ties with Sean Payton, he'd be welcomed by a franchise with a future Drew Brees like Andrew Luck in Indianapolis or to a lesser extent Ryan Tannehill in Miami.

If the ownership issue turns into a debacle, I'm not sure if I have it in me to diligently see it through like I did during the Ditka or Haslett years. I don't know if I want to watch 3-13 seasons again for half a decade. I just hope that if it does come to that the Saints organization has the talent evaluators to quickly get the franchise on solid ground. I think they do in Jeff Ireland.

I love Sean Payton, and even though he can get on my nerves with his stubborn playcalling, don't all coaches do that? Most do. Most fan bases get absurdly irate at the very coaches that bring them so much good. We need to face the facts...whether it's now or two years from now, the sun is setting on the golden age of Saints football. I'm really happy I was able to see it.

I've got some questions about this as well.

Hopefully, someone with actual knowledge about estate planning can give us some ideas.

Even with trusts, etc, 40% of $900M is a chunk. How will this get paid?

I don't know the particulars either. Truthfully, I should investigate it more. But I do home someone does come in here and provide some good information.

Please tell me it's not Tigerbait.

Estate law is difficult and it changes every year.
Trusts can do many things, but ultimately the government is gonna get that chunk.

Oftentimes, the death will force a sale. In larger markets, the team may stay put. I think there is a very real chance we could lose the Saints to another market, just b/c NO doesn't have as many millionaires as other cities.

I don't think the Saints would relocate in this event. There may not be many millionaires, but it only takes one to keep the team here. And if it comes to that I think that the Saints would ultimately have enough rooting interest from local big money to stay put. That doesn't bother me.

What does bother me is if the appeal blows up the ownership, which then blows up the front office and then what's left is rubble on the field.

Agreed.

I just feel like all those things are intertwined.

I think Payton really likes Tom Benson and as long as he is active, I can't se him leaving.

I think everyone agrees that the team is fricked if Rita takes over, but the NFL isn't going to let her leave New Orleans either way

I'm sure most people in the front office really like Tom Benson. I get the feeling that there is resentment toward Rita Benson and they are going to either get fired if she takes over or the coach and GM will leave.

I think the best hope for the franchise longterm is it stays away from them, is then sold to hungry ownership group that keeps franchise in new Orleans longterm. I'm not worried about the team leaving the city, more so just having a complacent owner.

The appeal will almost certainly fail, and the burden of proof required is pretty high. They were unable to prove with clear and convincing evidence, required in LA, that he was incapable of making reasoned decisions.

I'm sure they will dispute it after he dies too.

Agree and disagree.

Keep in mind, the NFL wants $$$$ and stable ownership, above all.

They aren't crazy about how old the Dome is and a new owner with the promise of a new stadium could lure them.

Besides, would you want Rita at your meetings?

$500 million in renovations changed that.

There is a $1 billion penalty to move the team to LA right now. Not sure if that applies to other cities too

I don't think Dallas and Houston would allow it

Also, Benson is well liked in owner's circle.

Not at all worried at the moment. So much more over a long span of time would have to happen to even start to affect the Saints FO and its performance.

I have bills to worry about and my bourbon budget is at a all time low. Rich folk fighting over dollars?
Meh.

We all say things we don't mean. But I'm not going to lie, I'm less interested and invested than I was a week ago.

Chance of the kids' appeal succeeding is basically non-existent. They lost. Nothing they can do now, but try to fight in TX to retain the non-controlling shares in the trust. Reporters are just bringing this up for click bait.

When Benson passes Gayle will receive controlling interest as per his estate planning. There will be no shortage of people and institutions willing to loan her the money necessary to pay off the taxes if she even needs it at that point considering NFL franchises print money.

I don't get why people are worried about this. Payton will only leave if he really just wants a new scene and the team can get serious compensation for him, but I do not see hat happening.
