It was like Sean Payton ran one of his cute double reverses...in the draft.

How so?

We passed up the opportunity to Draft a contributor for him. He needs to be the successor, and a good one, or that pick was wasted.

Like I said, as much as our 5th and 6th rounder played, and as bad as we were....that pick was just laughable.

Luxury we didn't have and wouldn't have made sense even if we did.

Saying that he needs to be a hall of famer and one of the best to ever play the position to be worth a 3rd round pick is beyond absurd. If you need someone to explain why then you are beyond help.

I think you're missing the context in relation to Joe Montana. He needs to be a successful heir to Drew Brees in order for that pick not to be wasted.

I think you're the one who needed help here. Then again, I already posted that in the post you responded to.

#Saints are doing QB homework again. Connor Cook is on the visit list, they had lunch with Paxton Lynch today, get IU's Nate Sudfeld in soon

If the Saints draft a QB, I have a want for Lynch. He is legit.

2 Scenarios:

Drew is extended/resigned.
God let's hope so. When it happens doesn't matter at this point. We have the cap to sign our draft picks, just as long as it happens. Let him retire a Saint, and give us a few more shots at it with an improving defense.
GG18 keeps showing us what he has in the preseason, and mop up duty.
If he does well, he's extended or traded for value.

Drew isn't extended/resigned.
Plays out 2016-17. No deal to be had. Decides to leave, for where? The Rams?
Do we make a trade offer for Jimmy Garoppolo? No.
GG18 starts 2017-2018. Trial by fire.
Worst case scenario he falls flat on his face. Draft Josh Rosen 1.1 in 2018.
Best case scenario? We made the right choice.

Why does having our arse covered with some solid upside offend you all so much?

I understand your point and it is valid.

Alternatively, the team needs 3 QBs. The 3rd QB should be a developmental QB that you think has the potential to be a quality starter. Matt Flynn is not that guy. GG18 is.

Why we took him in the 3rd is beyond me. Apparently the front office feels that the QB position is just that important and that he would not have been around in the 4th. Not sure that I agree with them, but it is their job to do this, not mine.

Aren't Payton/Loomis famous for taking out-of-left-field player meetings to disguise their draft day intentions?

Have to think that is what they are doing by meeting with Lynch. Get someone anxious to switch spots with them.

I posted a good piece about what player visits can mean in another thread. Many times those brought in are the ones you have bigger questions about, not because you like them so much.

As others have said, there's plain due diligence too. You have to establish your big board specifically for your team. I've pointed to the Aaron Rodgers example before. Favre was still rolling for the Packers. It wasn't value enough for the 22 teams between SF #1 Alex Smith and GB at #24. The Saints may have zero interest for any of them at #12. One of them slipping to the late 20's though might get their attention to make a move for.

With QB as little need you still must establish who you would have to consider if available- in every round! Lynch might be on that list for #47. Connor Cook at #78 similarly.

Wrong.. What if we develop him as a quality backup and get something in return for him??

Backups have value too

Yes but do they have equal or greater value to the investment you already put into them?

Ryan Mallet was considered a good prospect with starting potential and NE drafted him in the 3rd. They had to trade him for a 7th before it was all said and done.

Matt Cassel had to start an entire season post a 11-5 record in NE and still needed to be packaged with Vrabel to return a 2nd rounder.

Grayson will hopefully be limited to only being able to showcase himself in the preseason. A team would have to be head over heels in love with him.

Which ironically has happened...although buyers remorse could prevent a similar deal from happening again any time soon.

Houston traded 2 2nd rounders and swapped 1sts for Matt Schuab. Vick was the QB going into the season..Dogs/Prison etc. Atlanta ends up with Matt Ryan and a bunch of picks they did well on and put together a team that would make a few playoff appearances.

Houston got franchise QB Matt Schuab.

Yeah that was my thought. In a panic some team at 16 or 17 that really wants a QB might look and say "hey Drew hasn't signed an extension yet, the Saints met this guy, shite they might take him... GET LOOMIS ON THE PHONE!"

The preconceived script being written about Garret Grayson's career from what we know at this moment is pretty laughable. Saints doing homework on QB's is status quo and anything different would be pretty negligent. Even if Saints drafted Lynch, Grayson would still be a valuable backup regardless.

Grayson still has every short term and long term opportunity for him with the Saints.

This is my opinion...you just stated it better.
