It really doesn't matter what people want the Saints to do. They wouldn't be giving Fleener big money and going after Sitton if they plan on letting Brees walk next season. The deal will be done. Worst case scenario is they basically punt on 2017 FA and franchise him again. That is a possibility, and somewhat easily done if they cut Byrd. People making Madden trades with Brees are some combination of ignorant and stupid.

I was OK with the 4/$100m, but

quote:

Source in early Aug: Tom Condon, agent for QB Drew Brees, asked for $85M guaranteed on new deal. Brees said he thinks he can play 5 more yrs

$85m guaranteed is insane. Luck (a shitload younger) has $87m guaranteed in his 5 year deal. Von Miller is 2nd with $70m. Rivers is the next highest QB with $65m over 4 years.

And honestly, I really do believe that he can play another 5 years, but year 5 may be at 2015 Manning level. I still think that he has 2 elite years and 2 good years left.

There's a difference between fully guaranteed and guaranteed just for injury though.

I suspect we may go $50-60 mil fully with another year's salary guaranteed for injury on top of that (making it $75-80ish mil).

Of course with a 4/$100 mil contract in mind.

Brees has been seeking a [four-year] deal worth $100 [million] I'm told

That's pretty reasonable. Sign him.

There's two options. 1. Give him what he wants or 2. Let this year play out, thank in 2017, and sign the prodigy Josh Rosen from UCLA

Simply put. Rosen will cost the farm in picks and future picks if we aren't at 1.

Understand Drew wants to get what he can as this is likely his last contract, unless he becomes a FA....but if we can't field a team around him, namely the OL, what's the point???

Seems a cap friendly deal where he gets his $$$, but allows us the latitude to shore up the OL to protect him would be beneficial to 'all concerned'. Hope they can get it done, but I would not overpay for him....not at this stage of his career, and not with so many other holes on our roster.

Finding 2-3 offensive lineman is 100 million times easier to do than finding an elite quarterback to replace a hall of fame quarterback.

Alright TigerBait1127 that's all I want is a conversation Bro...Yes but we could get Drew Traded and who ever can work on a new deal with him but that can be made...Drew Bree's is all about Drew Bree's and I have seen straight through him and so has many others I talk to. Maybe som think we should pay him and hang on but now he has value we get a serviceable QB till we find a Good QB. I was a RG4 Fan but SP didn't like competition, and he looked good for Tampa in pre season. Front office sucks I agree with you for sure. But come on its time to go all the way over haul...

What does stupid feel like? I mean physically. Like is it a painful sensation or more of a numbness?

What?

Just like how you saw that Griffin could start for any team in the NFL?

He's thrown 1 TD to 4 interceptions. His passer rating is sub 60 this preseason.

Do you think that Griffin is near the QB that Drew Brees is?

Nope.

Frick that.

The last year better be a team option, preferably the last two years.

This extension can get done quite easily. Drew gets a new 5 year deal totaling 123 million. Done. Workout the guarantee and injury only guarantee boom.

Drew is scheduled to make 30 million this year. Signing him to a 4 year 25 mil per year deal would be akin to signing him next year for a 3 year 70 million deal

No he isn't. He's scheduled to make $20 million this year. The extra $10 million comes from his signing bonus and the restructure of his deal. That $10 million is set.

We're talking about an extension. You'd add it on. But you can convert a large % of the $20 million into the signing bonus, giving the Saints a lot more flexibility and making the cap hit % lower due to the ever increasing salary cap.

I don't think those numbers are bad. The issue here is how much does he want guaranteed and that's probably where the problem lies.
