Nope. They shutdown in the 2nd but Garret missed a chippy that wins that game in regulation and again 510 total yards for the 2-14 Chiefs. Chiefs got within 150 yards of that total only 1 more time after that game.

That's a nice strawman. I guess the defense had nothing to do with our wins huh? The offense did it all by themselves?

Spags needs to much talent to be good he is overrated needs to be replace he sucks. He had Michael strahan and osi at his prime. Crennel makes defense good because he can adjust from weaknesses. I see Payton showing him the door why do u think they want Payton back now to make that call before its to late to replace this sorry piece of poo.

They held people under 30 some games so that was good.

Offense didn't do shite in the 4th quarter. You can't seriously tell me it's all on the defense.

You know the funny thing is I'm not even arguing that the defense was good, just that they weren't the worst defense of all time. They certainly don't deserve all the blame for this year. Anyway, I said my peace.

All? No. I blame Hartley more than anybody but 510 yards to the Chiefs is dogshit.

You can add the Green Bay loss as well. Sproles dropped a pass on 3rd down of the last possession that would have gotten a 1st down plus more.

I just can't see how anyone can defend this defense.

I'm not talking about the numbers. I'm not talking about the circumstances. I'm not talking about the team as a whole. I'm not talking about wins and losses. I'M TALKING ABOUT THE DEFENSE.

They didn't tackle well.
They didn't create turnovers.
They didn't stop the run.
They didn't defend the pass.
They didn't rush the passer. (except for the Philly game)
They didn't get off the field on third downs.
They allowed the big play.
They allowed long sustained drives.
The last game was just as bad as the first game.

And for whatever reason, people on here keep saying its somebody else's fault.

Question: Without blaming someone else, do yall really think this defense was any good?

Our defense is consistently crappy every year regardless of coordinator. It's time to face facts. Our defensive players are shitty and our Front Office/Staff can't draft defense to save their lives. We are an offensive juggernaut with a ridiculously offensive minded head coach. We are what we are. We don't need a 49ers, Steelers or Ravens type of D to win championships. We need a defense that creates opportunities for our offense and can get that ONE stop we need. This is why we won our first ring. That defense was statistically not that great, but we were 2nd in turnovers. 2nd in the league in getting one of the most deadly offenses in the league the ball back. I think that is a stat that gets overlooked.

Their performance is their fault, but the blame for the 7-9 record isn't all on them. I would say that the offense is responsible for around 4 losses.

Good at times. The shutout is the obvious one. They played their asses off against Atlanta both times. They did a good job limiting Doug Martin in the 2nd game. They started producing more turnovers. Some of the younger guys in the secondary started playing well, showing good tackling. Lofton and Jordan were bright spots all year. Hicks has a bright future.

Overall it was bad. I never said it wasn't bad,

I agree entirely, there were long stretches where We couldn't move the ball and we dragged the defense back out there. The offense has good numbers but they didn't perform well if that makes sense.

The record is on the team. A win or loss is hard to attribute to any one person or unit.

And the number of yards given up are inflated compared to history because the rules and sophisticated offenses.

I'm not talking about those things. I'm saying the defense was bad and shouldn't be given a pass on being critisized. Teams have shitty offenses and play defense all the time. It's called stepping up. This defense didn't do that at all. That's what I'm saying.

That's what I'm talking about. It was overall bad. Worst in the league bad in yards and points. As a fan, that's unacceptable.

As I've also said, I'm not for firing Spags this year, but he better do some miracle working over the offseason before I'll give him credit for anything after this past year.

+1

Would love to be in the room during the first meeting where CSP reviews the 2012 def. with Spags.

I'll agree that we are an offensive team and the defense hasn't been a 49ers/Ravens type of defense and that's not what I'm expecting.

I'm expecting an average defense. This defense was so below average.

And I don't think we were second in turnovers. We had 26 takeaways (15 ints and 11 fumbles). We are tied for twelth in takeaways.

It was a bad defense, but this "Worst defense in NFL history" meme is driving me up the wall. Yardage given up is not the end all be all measure of a defense. Points per game and turnover ratio are more accurate indicators, and even those don't tell the whole story.

We had no head coach and a sputtering offense who couldn't run the ball and had serious pass protection issues. As bad as the defense was, the numbers were inflated. The defense improved, helping us win some games with critical stops and turnovers, and also kept us in some games despite the offense turning into an turnover machine.

Yes, the year sucked, and it's easy to just chalk it up to "Oh we had the worst defense in NFL history," but I'm not staring into the red light and forgetting everything that happened. Some of those guys on defense performed all season and played their asses off and don't deserved to get thrown under the bus for the entire season.

Any point someone is making using the "worst defense in NFL history" as support is still valid. You proving it is not actually "The Worst" does nothing to speak to the actual point.

When considering whether Spagnuolo should be retained, this years performance...whatever you want to call it...is absolutely a good argument for firing him. That defense...whatever you want to call it...was a TERRIBLE defense overall.

I don't understand why people want Spags fired. If you blame the defensive woes on coaching, I don't know what you're watching. We have about as much talent on defense as the local high school.

It's simply just a canned response to deal with the fact that this year has been pissed away.
