Brees did say he has never seen the call made like that. He said usually there is a warning before penalizing but it did not happen Sunday.

They did call the face mask, I'm pretty sure. Weren't the Saints called for holding on the same play and therefore offsetting?

not that one that offset (brees head got yanked to the side). there was another play where brees dropped back, got the ball out, and the defender came in and grabbed brees' mask and pulled it down. pretty obvious call, but the ref was looking at it from behind them.

OK, I guess I missed that one. Not surprised that crew didn't call it.

Drew does that with his hands every game. It won't get called next week, watch. The league definitely does protect some players more than other.

Defender was swatting at the ball and hit Brees's facemask on the way down; you're correct, Brees's big fat head blocked the referee's view.

Umpire in the backfield had a perfect view of play though.

Some odd officiating the last two weeks to say the least.

It's a judgment call on the field for the Ref. I'm definitely not saying they enforced it fairly, but hey, if I was reffing I would call it. I played defense in college, ask anyone that has played defense at the college level or higher and they'd say QBs get away with murder in the backfield with their movements.

I used to play WLB and sometimes MLB, when you have a blitz call you had to learn to have eyes on the ball and not the player - or else you'd be exposed before the ball even leaves the turf. I know a few guys that played DE in the NFL (much better players than me) and they would watch the QB. Buy them a drink, tell them that QBs have it rough with penalties, and they might punch you in the face.

In the past 6-8 years, since nfl made downfield contact less "handsy" I don't recall a flag for downfield contact being icked up.

Just like in the previous week against Pats a flag was picked up for holding because the "defender ran through it".

Just two odd occurences.

I had forgotten that ran-thru- the- hold call. My son texted me after that and asked is that a new rule? Wtf?

Just a thought that came to me yesterday: in a situation like yesterday where a personal foul penalty;face mask was offset by a holding call, I wonder why they wouldn't change that rule so a potentially injury-causing foul would be enforced over a hold or off- side etc. since the nfl is suddenly about player safety why wouldnt this help. any thoughts?

That didn't happen yesterday. Brees was smacked in the face and it wasn't called. But on that play Josh Hill dropped a pass that might have scored a td (the holding penalty).

That crew was bad, but I think crew from pats game was worse. Probably because that was a loss.

What I don't get is how they can call helmet to helmet contact when the QB ducks at the last second??

It's still helmet to helmet. Let's not get into this again.

In regards to the false start against Brees, I just went back and watched it. The one I saw was at the end of the 1st. I left to go get a drink, had a stupid person behind the counter and took forever. Anyway, got back after the second False Start. The 2nd one was horse sh*t. So yeah, first false start against him made sense. Second one, not so much.

whay did they pick up the flag on the PI against Meacham?

That was inexcusable, a clear hold of the jersey, then he picks up the flag! But there were other examples, saw a missed face mask and clear holding that wasn't called. But the thing about Drew, it's one thing to call it once, but back to back? That was nuts!!
