Because he is when he has a competent counterpart. The man knows offense. He's made some bad hires though.

So he is a great Offensive Coordinator then. A great HC manages the entire team, not just one faction of it. Hiring/Firing assistants is a major part of his duties.

Again, I am not saying he is a bad coach. I want to be clear on that. I am, however, baffled at this steadfast belief he is a great one. Modern history tells a different story

He is one of the better coaches in the league. He won a superbowl with the new Orleans Saints.

How is this front office incompetent? Are you telling me that Payton had no input regarding the players on this team?

Name me someone you view that is equal or better than Payton who is available for hire. I'll wait...

Maybe you could say he went off course as a HC because he has make good hires before.

Take a look at the bounty gate year and how disorganized things were, now that could be fixed with new head coach and new system, but there is no denying the guy is a good coach who has won a Super Bowl.

7-9 and 7-9? I'd rank him around 15.

Bellecheck
Arians
Harbaugh
Fox
Kubiak
McCarthy
Reid
Coughlin
Tomlin
Carroll
Lewis
Gruden

each of these are better than Payton right now. There are a few others that arguably are as well, but I would not rank them above him yet

The good news is that SP knows that most of the fans have his support. He knows that he and Drew are beloved here.

The bad news is that we fans have no way of controlling what will happen, nor do we have any access to any information.

don't get the absolute fanaticism regarding him remaining as coach though. Can some of you explain this to me?

Give me a viable actually obtainable replacement you'd be happy with.

I'd have no problem if he left and we hired Mike Tomlin. But I don't want Payton to leave and be replaced by some mediocre coach.

He does need to fire some assistants, and bring in a young and hungry DC that is allows free reign over all defensive aspects though.

I'm happy to give Payton another year and see what he does with a new scouting department, new young talents, and a new DC.

If he fricks allof that up and the offense remains stale, we'll reassess at the end of the season

How often do teams shitcan a superbowl winning coach and fill the void with anything other than a bum?

I agree.

The flaw in many fans' thinking is that he is still this great coach. Why? Because they hold on to the '09 season. The problem is that the Super Bowl was won 6 years ago, which is a lifetime in the NFL. The truth is what happens now is what you are.

Let's pose this question a different way: If we are sub 500 for the next 2 years, is he still a great coach?

Like I said a few times, I think we're rebuilding and I'd give him a couple years to try it out. In 2013 I think they made the conscious decision to patch and push for another superbowl and it failed. Now they're sort of rebuilding.
