It was a Monday Night Football preseason game in 1989.
I can still see Boomer hiding behind one of his lineman egging the crowd on as we kept getting flag after flag

You are correct. That was the game

Couple of my favorite games:
Houston vs saints circa 1991. Dome patrol sacked warren Moon about 8 times and he eventually had to leave the game
Saints at Buffalo circa 1993 Rickey Jackson picks off Jim Kelly and runs it back 90 yards in the snow for the win

I think I went to the following pre-season game and they were handing out "YAY/BOO" signs.

1987 against the Giants. It was one of the toughest games I ever saw and it was a defensive struggle mostly until the fourth quarter when Hebert hit Eric Martin on a pass over the middle and Martin shook lose from a Giants defender. The Dome went nuts...it was then that everyone pretty much knew that the Saints were a for real team and went on to win the remainder of their games

That was a brutal game. Actually sort of felt sorry for Moon. Swilling was unstoppable....hell, the entire defense that night should have been arrested for battery. It was an impressive performance.

I remember the Saints playing the Denver Broncos in the late 80's, the year following one of their Super Bowl losses. This was when the AFC was being called soft, and the Saints were considered one of the most physical teams in the NFL. As I recall, it was the perfect storm- the Saints won something like 45-0, and never punted. Had something like 40+ minutes time of possession, it was really like watching a high school team scrimmaging an NFL team. Saints never did anything flashy, just ran up, down and sideways on them, and totally strangled their offense.
There was another game from that era, where we beat up on the Falcons in Atlanta. Ran all over them, at will. I want to say Hilliard, Heyward, Gil Fenerty, and even our punt returner (Tyrone Hughes?) all ran for TDs out of the the tailback position.
Jim Mora loved him some runs and defense.
