But what about Greer? Last year under Ryan, the Saints D finally solidified, and Greer was great at locking down the opposing team's #1 receiver. I don't see any reason why he can't come back now and handle their #2's.

I hate to do this, but:

He's done man. And hes older. 32 years old with a brutal knee injury. He isnt a 2nd corner anymore man. Sad but true

What if on running plays we lined jimmy up outside to block a corner? Sorta like what Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, AJ Green, Andre Johnson, and Demaryius Thomas does.

Yeah good idea. Maybe let's just play him as a WR.

Oh wait...

Can I say something provocative?

I don't think Greer was ever more than pretty good.

Do you think he could block a corner?

He was definitely above average and one of our top 2 guys since he got here. He was good at shutting down people. You never really had to worry about Greer to much. He did his job well. He might not be a top 5 elite corner, but he was a good player.

So he needs to be replaced at least by someone above average.

I know a corner can block him.

Definitely.

But our defense often sucked, so it's not saying much.

The only reason to be upset about these cuts is loyalty to the players. I agree that all of then have been huge for this team, but Sproles and Moore are done. They've had great careers and have been money for this team, but there's a reason this offense struggled last year. We have to get an infusion of young playmakers. The old has to make way for the new. We finally have a good enough defense to draft offense this year. We can't hold on to old playmakers who can't make the plays this offense needs.
Greer is obvious. I knew after the injury that his time on the saints was done. You don't come back from an injury like that at 32 years of age. He played well last year, but he won't be able to come back from that injury.
PT is the only guy on the chopping block who can still make plays for this team. But it's a business. We can get a RB in the third for 1/3 of his price who could provide just as much production. It's really not that hard of a decision.

09 was his best year. He also was bouncing back this year before the injury.

he wasn't great but he wasn't horrible. his position has been our achilles for a while. and frick rewatching that knee injury. Luckily ive never torn knee ligaments.

Same here. I will be upset if PT is gone, but it's understandable. I'm actually surprised the team is cutting some of these players. We've been pretty loyal over the years but these decisions need to happen for cap space and youth since we really do need to move on at some point. Sad to see, though. PT is one of my favorite saints and if he's gone it'll be tough to see.

I think he was a top 15-20 or so corner in the league at his best

I think the bounce back had a lot to do with not being forced to cover the 1s at age 32 because we had no one else. I think that's why he looked "bad" the previous two years.
