17. Can't go over 90 players. Which means at least a few of these are tryouts.

Didn't want to start a new thread on this yet, but an early look at next year's roster and cap shows 59 players under contract (though that's including the 17 UDFAs who surely won't all make it) with about $50 mil in space.

The biggest FAs we have are Brees, Armstead, Unger, potentially Fairley, and potentially Lelito (last two depends on play this year).

Given that we backload contracts (which is the best thing to do as players rarely see the big payday in the last year or two) we can easily resign them all if we want and have lots of room for FAs.

A hypothetical Brees contract could be 3 years at $28 mil per on the high end. I'll assume it may be closer to $25 mil per. We can likely fit him in at $20 mil on the cap.

Armstead may command about $16 mil per. He should be on a longer contract so maybe 6 years. That lets you ramp his up more gradually. We can easily fit him in with an $8 mil cap hit year one.

Unger is getting older and center isn't as costly. He may command $7 mil per at 2-3 years. Could get him on the cap for $4 mil year one.

Even if Lelito starts I don't expect him to get more than $4 mil, but I'll put him at $3 mil per. He can sign a longer contract, likely between 3-5 years. $2 mil is an easy number for year one.

Fairley is more tricky and it really depends not only on his production but the other guys at his position. Shouldn't command more than $5 mil per even with a good year (unless he really goes off). Putting it closer to $3 mil per and giving him the same $2 mil first year hit as Lelito.

If all five are resigned for around those amounts it comes to $36 mil of the cap, leaving us with about $14 mil left.

We could also choose to do even heavier backloading like we've done when slammed against the cap, but I don't see it being necessary.

This is also before any cuts, restructures, or potential paycuts.

Jeremy Cash to the Panthers, supposedly.

ETA: LINK - don't know how credible this guy is as a source but it's all I've been able to find thus far.

-just checking in here...

Have the UDFA signings diminished the whining about no guard drafted?

Avery Young has a 4th or 5th Rd draft projection-
https://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/avery-young?id=2555497

Landon Turner has a 4th or 5th Rd draft projection-
https://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/landon-turner?id=2555139

The Center Jack Allen a 5th Rd draft projection-
https://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/jack-allen?id=2555183

Haven't looked but would think some of the UDFAs are on the Best Unsigned Lists. A just on those three. The Saints are among the best with UDFAs. They have established perhaps the strongest reputation in the league for giving guys a legitimate shot. So, who do ya wanna sign with if ya have a choice? Kudos for the CFL signings too.

I'm especially excited about Avery Young. I think he can be a starting guard down the road. And I think Allen could possibly be a starter at C as well. I"m not as sold on Turner, just looking as his film, but I love it that we signed him as a UDFA.

Your analysis is always on point.

Thanks. That was really just a rough estimate though. After some numbers come in and I check into average contracts for comparable players I'll be able to give a better outlook.

I say at bare minimum we'll have $10 mil in cap if we resign all five of those guys (before cuts, etc.), and potentially up to $30 mil though that is less realistic. I think $20 mil in space is most likely (though that's with one or two of these guys walking not named Brees or Armstead).

It sure in the hell beats the $20 mil over we started with a couple of years back.

Bone... do you suggest extending Brees this year or next (tag being worst case) . Asking because it seems we are finding the light at the end of the cap hell tunnel

We cannot let him hit FA and he is too expensive to tag, though we can technically afford it. Need to tag Armstead instead though.

But Brees' agent may be willing to play chicken and let Brees become a FA. Risky but more profittable.

Rock and a hard place. Condon knows it.

Can't tag or lose Drew.
Can't afford to lose Armstead either.

Need to restructure Drew before 2017.

Hopefully Drew can agree to a reasonable deal. After 160 mill already in Saint dollars frick his life problems. Take 23-25 per over 3 or 4 years and call it a career.

This does not include book or endorsement money(11 mill alone in endo money for 2015)

Won't happen. Drew wants a 5 yr deal @ 30M per and he believes he can get that in the open market if the Saints don't pony up.
