It might be a good idea to let the guy play.

Everyone wants that guy that puts pressure on the qb. But the Ed Reed, Darren Sharper, and Troy Polomala types are equally important. Now am I saying this guy will be on that level? No, there is no way of knowing that right now. Just saying that a ball hawking safety is just as important as pass rusher that can get to the qb.

Its amazing this debate is still going on being that the Saints front office didn't think JJ was 'premium".

Yep. After listening to Payton's comments on the draft picks, it's obvious the front office puts a lot of stock into measurables and athleticism.

Jones was too much of a gamble with his poor combine performance, poor attitude, and injury history. He was never going to be the pick even if Vaccaro wasn't there.

Pressure on the QB is important, but when you have glaring holes in your coverage, it's an uphill battle. Harper is that glaring hole. Vaccaro is the front office's solution.

We were also toward the bottom of the league in sacks. The best way to help the entire secondary is to get pressure on the qb.

Maybe they see Cam Jordan improving and bring pressure from tr DE position still.

The guys who did get consistent pressure last year were limited in their snaps. Spags really loved Sith and Ellis for some reason. Regardless Ryan's defense is a pressure scheme. There's going to be pressure. Sacks will depend on how the secondary holds up.

You know Jordan isn't the best pass rusher on the team right? Part of the reason we are switching to a 3-4 is to put our pass rushers in position to succeed.

Jordan did lead the Saints with 8 sacks last year.

In a completely different role. The reason we didn't go Jones in the first round has nothing to do with Jordan.

I'm sorry friend. Did the title of this thread mislead you into thinking I was offering something other than my opinion?

While being known as a run stuffing end and not a sack specialist.

Junior was also third with 5 while playing only about 25% of the snaps(Smith was second with 6 while playing most of the snaps).

I am a little ignorant, but is there 1 DE in a 34 more likely to be a pass rusher? and if so why not put Cam Jordan there?

No. At least not in Rob Ryan's type of 3/4 which is two gap. Which the d-lineman will be more concerned with the running lanes on each side of them. That is why we needed a big ugly (john jenkins) for the middle. Thus, there will be no point where we look for Cam or any of them to be a rusher. Of course, if they collapse the pocket that would be appreciated, but that will not be their main focus. It will be to eat up blockers and control their lanes.

J.J. Watt excels in the Wade Phillips style 3/4 because he is only asked to contian 1 gap. Also, because he's a special talent, Wade moves him all over the place. Wade's style wants more atheletic down lineman.

He runs 1-gap. Go do some research on him.

He's actually run both. He ran the 1-gap in Dallas because of his personnel.
