No. He would get a whole new contract. RFA tender is only for Patriots.
What if he got traded to Saints without a new contract?

We'd probably use this 3.9 year to help spread a bonus out?

He can agree to a contract other than just the tender. Think of it as a restrcture + extension.

I'd assume his hit would be spread out largely via signing bonus

In the National Football League, a restricted free agent (RFA) is one with three accrued seasons (six or more regular season games with a team)[1] of service, who has received a "qualifying" offer (a salary level predetermined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players, known as a "tender") from his current club.

quickly looked up the exact definition of RFA. that tender and its terms are only for the Patriots. theres no way for it to transfer to a new team.

I know but we aren't just going to pay him 9 million salary when he's signed for 3.9 this yr.

He signed the sheet.

He wouldn't be traded under your scenario

That seems unlikely because he'd literally be Untradable if another team couldn't take on his contract - even if it was with intent to restructure.

ah so yeah I guess his yr 1 would be what he signed. however, obviously theres a handshake deal in place. or you know, we could frick him over.

Then the Saints would guarantee he wouldn't resign and they would've traded for his comp pick basically

Pats get no picks, they get Mr. Mark Ingram for Sir Malcolm Butler, straight up -- we sign AD/AP & draft McCaffrey early or Kamara later

Surely someone else out there loves this as much as I do

Pats just signed Mike gillissle to a RFA contract and the bills aren't expected to match

Yes they are. That's how it works. If the trade happens, it'll be for the going rate.

I'd think if we traded the 42 and picked up an immediate impact type of pass rusher at 11 then that would free us up to get the best playmaker available at 32 and be set to make some noise next year.
