Malcolm Butler saga is just getting started

The Malcolm Butler trade chatter has died down quite a bit over the past week, but that appears to only be temporary.
The New England Patriots' restricted free agent cornerback attracted the most attention from the New Orleans Saints this offseason as he went down for a visit with the team and for a moment it appeared like a move was imminent.
Then he left the facility without the two sides coming together on an offer sheet and not a lot of traction was made beyond that.
However, Albert Breer of the MMQB said on CSNNE on Sunday night that Butler in a Saints uniform in 2017 is still very much a possibility.
"I still think there is a good chance he goes to New Orleans," said Breer. "I think it would be in that one week window when he comes off of the market, obviously still now he's on the RFA market. Once we get a week before the draft he can't even talk with other teams anymore. By then, he knows what's out there, he feels comfortable, he signs the (tender) and then the Patriots can start talking to teams in the week leading up to the draft.
"At that point I think the Saints put something in front of the Patriots and we'll see whether or not they can consummate a deal."

Earlier this offseason the Patriots placed a first round tender on Butler which means that a team that signs him to an offer sheet is at risk of losing their first round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft if New England elects not to match their offer.
That's why New Orleans backed off of their pursuit of Butler because they were unwilling to risk losing the No. 11 overall pick they currently own.
Also, because Butler has yet to sign his tender, New England cannot negotiate a trade for him with other clubs, per league rules.
Once he does that, the Patriots will be able to engage other clubs for the corner and that is why Breer still thinks it's more likely Butler will be playing in the Big Easy as oppose to Foxboro come Week 1.
"I think it's close, but I still think it's most likely New Orleans than New England because I think New Orleans is motivated to go and get this player and New Orleans obviously has a spare first round pick now because of the Brandin Cooks trade," he said.
Butler has been with the Patriots since signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2014. That season his biggest impact was intercepting Russell Wilson at the goal line in Super Bowl XLIX to clinch the team it's fourth title in franchise history.
Following that historic moment he's helped the team win another Super Bowl and evolved into a true No. 1 corner.
While it appeared to have subsided for the moment, the way Breer is talking it seems like the Malcolm Butler saga is just getting started.

Feel like the longer this goes the less likely we're gonna be to give up anything close to 1st rounder.

New Orleans keeps chasing FA DB's with big money.....I hope if this goes down Butler performs to the pick/ contract we invest in him. With supposedly a deep DB draft I personally would rather get help there latter in draft and go DL or BPA at 11 and 32.

We have new collars now so I could GAF.

only way is through a trade. no way we give up 11

Off the Butler bandwagon. Would rather use the 32 or 42 on a younger corner. He can stay in NE for the money he's going to generate. Good player, but we have other options.

only thing I would give up is Ingram

Giving up 42 for Butler would be pretty legit. Barnett at 11 and a RT at 32 + Butler along with two 3rds for a RB + whatever else Sean desires(WR?)in addition to our FA would leave me pretty amped heading into next year

Corey White
Patrick Robinson
Johnny Patrick
Stanley Jean-Baptiste
Usama Young
David Jones

I believe this deal has been done since the Brandin Cooks trade.
The only hold up is Butler and his contract demands. He's waiting until the last minute hoping some other team offers more money. Once that doesn't happen, he'll sign the tender and he'll be traded to the Saints for 32.
Too many sources with good track records have stated this is how it goes down.
11 isn't and never was on the table. I strongly believe it will be 32 - the placeholder if you will.

Agreed. I was talking to a 49ers fan the other day and jabbing him about "stealing" Hightower. I told him I'd rather them have taken Ingram. He would rather Hightower.
Butler on the other hand is an appealing piece of the puzzle, but without a pass rush he will appear to be another FA bust in my opinion. Not Brandon Browner or Jason David level, but definitely won't be as productive.

exactly. its amazing how quickly people forget how much of a gamble rookie CBs are. So instead of getting a proven vet with the 32 pick, you could very easily get someone who might not even make it to year 4?
give yourself the best chance to win. trade for Butler.
eta: correlation does not equal causation. just because it didnt work out with Byrd, does not mean itll be the same story with Butler.

i'd be cool with it if Butler joins the Saints.
more importantly, I'd hope the Saints add more pieces in the draft to help a mediocre pass rush.
pass rush hasn't been all that good for a few years now and the Saints have had terrible luck with injuries to corner backs.
an awful combo.

seriously...look at that 2014 draft.
Just after the Greer injury and retirement, we all said we needed a 2nd fiddle with Lewis. White was 'okay', but our defense looked vastly different with white than with greer.
that draft had justin gilbert, who was considered by many the next 'lock down' corner. They 1st round also had guys like kyle fuller, darqueze dennard, jason verrett, and bradley roby.
Out of those 5 guys:
1 is about to be out of the league (gilbert)
2 are relatively good but dealt with injuries (verrett/fuller)
1 is improving but slightly better than average (dennard)
1 is above average (roby)

I'd rather have him than a rookie CB since we're riding the Brees train into the ground.
If I were the GM I'd have traded Brees last offseason and started the rebuild.

This "win now" mantra has produced 7-9 seasons four out of the last five years. We've achieved this by having less draft picks and doling out big contracts to marginal to below average players
At this point, Id rather accumulate as much talent as possible, on rookie deals. Stop worrying about the present year and look down the road a little bit?? This means dont give a high pick for Butler, trade up for McCaffery etc

Thank you. Nothing is a guarantee, except the huge salary we'll owe Butler.
