With 5:39 left in the second quarter, Saints quarterback Drew Brees was hit while attempting a pass. The ball popped forward. Believing it to be an incomplete pass, an official blew his whistle. Lions linebacker Justin Durant thereafter recovered the ball and ran toward the end zone. Then, it was announced that the ruling on the field was that Brees had fumbled — and that Detroit had recovered.

“Referee Tony Corrente ruled the play was a fumble and a recovery by Detroit,” the league said in a statement emailed Sunday night to PFT. “However, during the play and before Detroit recovered the fumble, another official blew the whistle believing it was an incomplete pass. Because the ruling on the field was a fumble, and the whistle came before the recovery, the play is dead because of the inadvertent whistle and the Saints should have retained possession of the ball. New Orleans would then have had the choice to put the ball in play at the spot where possession was lost or to replay the down. Inadvertent whistles are not reviewable.

How's that feel schwartzy! There's a reason it's a dead ball when the whistle blows. Because people stop playing! Who knows what would have happened had the whistle not been blown.

It was definitely a fumble, but I don't know why people assumed it would be an automatic TD if the whistle wasn't blown. I rewatched the game, and not one of the Saints squad was really making an attempt
at recovering the ball because of the whistle.

I was pissed at Meach for just standing there especially once they awarded them the ball. I couldn't hear the early whistle from the Terrace. I guess Schwartz couldn't over the sound of his doucheiness.

This. This. This. It wouldn't have been a Touchdown.

I'll admit the refs blew the call, but to assume that the Lions would have scored a TD on the play is stupid.

This exact issue came up in the Pitt/Denver game yesterday. Pitt kept the ball bcs a ref blew the pass incomplete on a backwards pass to Wallace.

That's why I was so mad...I couldn't understand how Detroit got the ball when the whistle blew before the Lion defender recovered.

The NFL is getting better about admitting referee mistakes. Wonder if they'll say anything about the linesman in the NY/Atl game who was getting spots wrong all day.

SEC office should pay attention.

this, I thought is was pretty amazing to see the same scenario pop up- although administered correctly.

My discontent with refs has stepped up quite a bit this year. My take:

1- increased rules increases their involvement in the game, more outcomes affected by calls rather than just letting them play

2- the wide disparity in the administration of rules and calls is increasing. So not only more reffing but you have to know the call range of the particular crew. Again, more of their human element than the performance of players

3- these high profile refs are not fulltime employees. With the increased profile from the rules there could be better and more consistent enforcement if they could devote time to be critiqued, review, and study during the week.

4- I question how many refs egos are too big as far as getting face time on national tv
