Obviously, our defense is horrible. We have a long way to go to improve it, but watching these playoff games, there is little defense being played by the other teams either. Teams are making significant stops at critical times, though. That is what the Saints are missing.

What do we have to do to be a defense that can make a stop at a critical time? That is what we are lacking.

sign Ed Reed.

We just need to be opportunistic. Darren Sharper and Tracy Porter are the perfect examples of what this defense is missing.

I think so. Teams go up and down the field in the NFL all the time. We don't have to keep teams under 250 yards and 13 ppg to win with our offense. We just need to get stops periodically and at critical times more often than we are. We can give up 400 yards and 30 points in a game and the defense can still play well if it can get a stop at the end of the game or when the offense needs the ball back. That is what we lacked this year and the offense was not good enough to overcome all of that with Payton gone.

We might not be as far away as we think we are.

Even with our historically bad defense we were closer to the playoffs than most realize. We blew at least 3 or 4 games this year bc of coaching, youth, exhausted defense, missed FGs... the list goes on.

Corrections will be made so let's just hope it's enough. I think we will be just fine.

Top 15 and we're good enough to win the super bowl.

we just need to play timely situational football. We need a pass rush when we get the lead, and create a few turnovers...that's really it.

As long as Brees is in his prime, the defense just needs to add a playmaker or 2. We need another Sharper (cough TM7 cough)!

I agree with the Sharper statement. Ed Reed would fit that bill. As for TM7, I'm not sure how his skills or lack thereof, would translate to the NFL.

If they do, his playmaking ability will be huge for whatever team drafts him.

All the Saints need is a defense ranked in the middle of the pack. Being how explosive our offense can be , our defense doesn't have to be a top ranked defense.

We shouldn't think about it this way IMO. Our defense needs to get TOs and stops. The yardage allowed is irrelevant. Our defense will always give up a lot of yardage bc our offense scores a lot and scores quickly. This means the other team gets a lot of offensive snaps as well.

Point differential and forced TOs are a MUCH more important stats for our defense than yardage allowed.

This is why I think (other than Bounty, obvs) Greg Williams was perfect for the system we need to run in NO.. We need an aggressive defense that creates turnovers.

FWIW I like Spags and I think he is plenty aggressive but we need more TOs.

We really only need to be 1 touchdown better, and be able to get off the field a bit more on 3rd downs.

I won't even touch the yardage

How about one that doesn't give up over 450 per game and blows 4-5 coverages per game.

yeah, just look at the team who lead the NFL in fewest yards allowed this year. It was the Steelers who finished at 8-8. I think they finished at the top of that category in 2011 too but look at how they ended up. Tim Tebow sent their arse home in the playoffs.

the whole yardage thing can be an overrated stat but it still sucks we stooped to a new low this year.

With this offense being ranked 14-19th in the league would be nice.

Somehow get a #1 offence and a top 5 defence, just to make people cry when they played us.
