nonetheless it was an interception for a player who most see as just a pure pass rusher (one dimensional player)

I've gotten to the point where reading a players strengths and weaknesses from some random/anonymous scout isn't interesting to me anymore.

I think Barnett is a can't miss player in the NFL. Are there better can't miss players? Perhaps.
One thing stood out in that CSP interview was the absolute focus on players with the want to compete and the desire to win at all cost.
Look for this to guide them as he said it did in 2016's draft picks.

I just feel like there are too many contradictions in those scouting reports.

for example, one might read

Strengths: Flashes dominating ability.. big, and strong athletic... knows how to use his hands!!!!!!!! Has the traits to control a game!!

Weaknesses: At times is not quick to locate the ball.. needs to improve overall pass-rush skills... While he can dominate, there are times when he is not a factor!!!

The contradictions are ridiculous & numerous across almost every report that you read.

I think we can at least agree on that guy I watched his game against Alabama from 2016 and he put Robinson on skates all game. There was one play where he goes super super low and Robinson loses all his leverage, it was unbelievable. I have no idea how he was still on his feet. Dude is a monster.

True but think about this. Watt & Miller are in the process of building Hall of Fame resumes.

Dee Ford & Danielle Hunter are just stretching the surface of their potential. Both posted double digit sack numbers this year. 12.5 for Hunter & 10 for Ford.

Vic Beasley lead the NFL in sacks with 15.5 & made the Pro Bowl. Even with the flaws, they are all excelling in the NFL despite the perceived "weaknesses" by their NFL.com scouting reports. I don't see this being any different concerning Derek Barnett.

The 2015 matchup, Garrett gave Robinson all he could handle & then some. This past one in 2016 was kind of one sided in favor of Robinson. Two reasons behind that. One, no one knows how healthy Garrett was for the majority of this past season. Just like Leonard Fournette, Myles Garrett battled a high ankle sprain.

quote:

Garrett suffered a high ankle sprain in a Sept. 24 game against Arkansas. He sat out the next week against South Carolina. Garrett played two games after that -- against Tennessee and Alabama.

"You could see he was only about 75 percent," said Brugler. "He played pretty well against Alabama (7 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss), but you also could see he wasn't at his best."

LINK

Secondly, Garrett seemed to be instructed by John Chavis not to take an inside rush move against Robinson in order to not allow Jalen Hurts the ability to escape the pocket. Not only did the scheme not work but it also handcuffed the A&M's best defender. Chavis used to do the same thing with Danielle Hunter. This is a good breakdown of the Myles Garrett vs Cam Robinson matchup this past season.

I have a higher grade on him than I had on Reggie Ragland. Better pro potential to me.

As a Bama fan I don't agree with this. Reggie was a beast. Still think Foster, if healthy will be good but Im uneasy taking him at #11 with the health concerns

For 3 years in a row, LSU dominated him and took him completely out of the game. If a Les/Cam offense for 2 years can stypmie him, imagine what the NFL OC's are going to do. Overrated.

I mean we also completely dominated Clowney in 2012.

You realize that teams like LSU can completely focus on a single player like that and take him out. We have always, under Les, done a good job of taking out standout individual edge rushers. The issue is when you have a speed rusher like that next to an interior threat and across from another good DE.

The guy has undeniable talent

Remember Danielle Hunter at LSU under Chavis? 4.5 career sacks at LSU. He had 12.5 sacks last year, and 6 as a rookie

Not gonna lie. I really hate the lead up to the draft As much as I love the draft itself because of write ups like that

Something about myles garrett just screams bust to me... I'm not sure what it is and I wouldn't argue about it, I just don't see him panning out in the NFL. That's my worthless opinion for the day

When did they ever see Foster taking on blockers to come to any conclusion? The guy was free to chase the ball unfettered 99% of the time. Vicious hitter, no doubt, but they were right in one respect, he, like most of the Alabama players lead with their heads.

MTS notes: Derek Barnett might be NFL draft's best pass rusher

quote:

It's well-established that Texas A&M's Myles Garrett is viewed as the top pass rusher in the draft, but Tennessee's Derek Barnett definitely deserves consideration for the honor after terrorizing the SEC as a destructive force off the edge for three seasons. In fact, you could make the argument that Barnett should own the No. 1 spot at the position after wreaking havoc on SEC foes as the Vols' designated pass rusher.

quote:

Yet, scouts paying close attention to SEC football and Barnett's spectacular production should give the Tennessee star a serious look at the top of the draft. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound defensive end broke Reggie White's sack record and finished with the second-most tackles for loss (52; one behind Leonard Little's mark) in Vols history. In addition, Barnett is the only player in SEC history to finish with at least 10 sacks in three straight seasons.

Let that marinate for a minute.

quote:

When I study the tape, I see a relentless pass rusher with an outstanding combination of skill and technique. Barnett is one of the best hand-to-hand combat fighters that I've watched in years, and his ability to win with a variety of slick maneuvers makes him nearly impossible to slow down off the edge. In addition to his superior hand skills, Barnett has the rare ability to win with finesse or power off the edge.

He displays enough quickness, balance and body control to blow past blockers with dip-and-rip maneuvers or he can use a variety of power moves, including the butt-and-jerk or bull rush to get home off the edge. With Barnett also displaying a non-stop motor to complement his technically sound game, he's like an old-school construction worker with a hard hat, lunch pail and a shiny toolbox.
He has all of the rugged traits that you covet in a player while also displaying the skills to dominate at the next level.

"He's not going to run a fast 40, but if you like tough, violent, high-motor players with production, you'll love him," said an AFC executive. "He kind of reminds me of a young Terrell Suggs coming out of Arizona State."

Alabama AVOIDED this dude and he still made plays when available. The number of guys that can get after the QB with marginal athleticism in the league is pretty astounding. He is the anti-Mingo and I would love to have him.

Hunter rotates out quite a bit too. Minnesota struck gold. Believe he is still only 22.

As per the other post on this board by know people know my lack of desire for Foster. As I have stated I have met the kid and he is not the brightest bulb.

Saying that I agree that he is not a MLB. Now if we somehow think we can get him to perform as the WLB I would be more open to the pick.

My fear here would be that we took Anthony 2 years ago and he played MLB under Ryan where he was able to play like Foster at Bama, but under Allen's scheme and attempt to move to WLB it has become public knowledge that he has struggled to pick up the cerebral part of the game.

I have to think that an Allen-Foster combination might yield similar results. The comparison to Wagner may be a good one, but think about how that Seahawk defense is allowed to fly around the field from every position.

Ryan/Allen it doesn't matter the Saints play defense to defend the next 10 yards of turf. The Seahawks played defense to take the ball away and push you backward.

One thing that worries me about Foster (and it's not necessarily his fault) is that he got to play behind a dominant defensive line at Bama. It's much easier to play LB when the 4 guys in front of you are blowing everything up. He's not going to have that luxury in the NFL.

He obviously has the size, but I feel like he is going to be a boom/bust player. He'll make a few great plays followed up by some bonehead plays. If the Saints were going LB (and I don't think they will), I'd take the kid from Vandy. You know he didn't have nearly the same help at Vandy, yet he made plays. He may not have the huge upside of Foster, but he could be a solid every down guy. For a defense that has struggled for so long, solid guys would be welcome addition
