First his hair, now his legs? This guy has it all. The total package.

quote:While all of that is true, these are probably not diabetes related. Diabetic ulcers typically form on pressure points (on the heel or "ball" of the foot for example). To simplify the explanation, it causes damage to the peripheral nerves, leading to decreased sensation in the feet. The person doesn't realize they've been putting pressure on the area, and combined with poor circulation, it leads to ulceration.
Diabetes degrades the circulatory system, restricting healthy blood flow to the extremities. Diabetics with poor control are susceptible to infections and protracted healing times for wounds. That can often lead to amputation.
I'd speculate they're either trauma related, aterial disease related or venous stasis ulcers.

quote:You're correct. Was just simplifying to explain the Diabetes reference earlier in the thread. I didn't actually think Ryan's leg issue was Diabetes related. Though he better lose some weight or Type II could rear it's ugly head for him one day.

I'm actually an insulin dependent diabetic, and have been since I was 14, because I am Type 1(juvenile diabetic)
My type of diabetes is hereditary so I was born with it and has nothing to do with being fat or out of shape.
Type 2 (Adult onset)is brought on by being older in age and being overweight thus the one at the butt of all the jokes.
And yes I do have to be really careful with cuts and stuff like that, especially on my legs and feet because it can cause bad stuff to happen if you don't.
OK carry on......

quote:Yes, I'm aware of the difference. I'm type 1 diabetic as well and it had nothing to do with weight. Diagnosed when I was 8. Weirdly, I have no history of it in my family. Largely manageable disease luckily. Eat well, exercise, monitor blood sugar level religiously, remain vigilant of wounds and visit the Endocrinologist regularly. Yay modern medicine.

You two seem lucky with those type 1s. Had an ex that was type 1, and she's basically either shot herself up with insulin or carried an insulin pump around since she was a child.
It's manageable but there was a lot more to it than exercise. Judging right amounts of insulin before a meal, counting and guesstimating best serving sizes and sugar/carb counts. Manageable yes but easy, certainly not.

quote:Yeah, as a type 1, there is really no way around this necessity.

quote:Not easy for sure, but I don't remember a time when it wasn't constantly on my mind. Just like anything else, you do it enough, and it's routine. Though I would welcome it obviously, it would actually be harder for me after 23 years with the disease to sit down to a meal and not consider its ramifications.

quote:Not weird at all, because it's not a genetic disease. It's due to antibodies that attack healthy tissue (i.e. autoimmune).
Weirdly, I have no history of it in my family.

All funny but true story is he was attacked by pit bulls in California. Also has a nasty bite on his arm...bicep area.
