thought it might be an appropriate spot for Lou Gehrig's farewell speech at Yankee Stadium. 2-3months after diagnosis, died two years later...
HERE
Gleason didn't have the sports career of Gehrig but people that face up to these things and battle them publicly go into my hall of fame as humans.
I'll go so far as to say his play was the official start of the golden age of Saints football
As a human, as a man, I see the same spirit and fight that brought that play about in this pic

I'm not so sure about that.
Not at all.
I don't think he's comparing Alzheimer's with ALS. I think he's saying that Alzheimer's is rougher on the family than it is the patient. Its painful for those who are perceiving their loved one in such a state as opposed to the patient themselves. With ALS the patient is still fully aware of their surroundings but once their body shuts down cannot physically manifest the actions or speech or really anything they want to perform. Their mind is basically trapped in their body...this would obviously be extremely difficult for both the patient and family.

This really hurts to hear this..i can only hope that somehow, someway he can at least stay with us for a while longer. He is such an inspiration to everyone

Ah ok.
I misread, thank you for clearing that up.
I imagine that makes sense.

That is such a sad deal. Amazing how wonderful Steve's perspective has been through all of this, I sure hope he makes it to the opener.
I know Sean Payton has been pretty involved with Gleason's charity over the past couple of years. With the extra time on Sean's hands partnering up with Steve even further would be a great thing to do while serving his suspension...assuming Satan errr I mean Goodell would allow it.
kinda off topic, and might be a stupid question, but given the situation that Sean Payton is in, is he allowed to keep in contact with Gleason? what happens if he goes to the hospital to visit him and Brees or one of the coaches are there? Even worse, is it possible that if Gleason does lose his battle with ALS (god, i hope not), will he be able to attend the funeral?

yeah I'm fairly certain the NFL would have no problem with it...he probably just has to tell them (which in itself is a bunch of crap)
Posted on 4/18/12 at 12:46 pm to St Augustine
can you imagine the backlash if the commish didn't let SP attend?

Goodell is an a-hole, but he's not a freaking monster.
He'd let Payton go, no problem.

Yeah no doubt, Im also pretty sure hes gonna let Payton tell Drew congrats on the new baby and go see his kid. Someone alluded to him not doing that in another thread.

Yeah I was talking about the patient. Sorry for the miss lead.
Goodell will get a arse full no matter at what point in time he comes to New Orleans and I think he knows that. I would be shitting in my pants to think that I have to make that trip for the SB. Just sayin

I hate seeing MLS break this guy down. He's truly a great person. It will be sad to see him go.
I hope the Saints do something special for him. Either retire a jersey number or put his name up, something.

I truly look up to Gleason, but it is sad to see him go so fast.

That's nothing for us to debate. Both are horrible, and both are devastating to the person and the families that love them. My prayers go out to Steve and to his family....This is a sad sad deal for everyone involved. If his story brings tears to MY eyes, I can only imagine how those that know him and love him feel....
