Position fit:

Any position along the defensive interior. Fit for either 2-gap or 1-gap.
Stats to know:

Second-highest-graded interior defender over the last two seasons.
What he does best:

• Elite short-area quickness for his size. Makes offensive linemen look silly with nut-stunts.
• Immediately controls linemen when playing from a head-up position.
• Already understands his leverage advantage and drives through offensive linemen.
• Explosive interior player. One of the few in the class that offers some juice as a pass-rusher. Was one of most successful players in one-on-ones at the Senior Bowl.
Biggest concern:

• Production completely died off over last six games in 2015.
• Size doesn’t seem to fit his strengths. Was great in college at 2-gapping, but his limited height (6-foot-1) and length means that may not translate to NFL.
• Disappeared as a pass-rusher for stretches. Was held without a single pressure in his final college game against Texas A&M.
Player style comparison:

Jurrell Casey, Tennessee Titans. Both are short, squatty defensive tackles that are far more versatile than their size suggests.
Bottom line:

Rankins’ versatility and production should outweigh any concerns about his height. The DT checks so many boxes that he should be an early first-rounder.

1. Sheldon Rankins, Louisville

Best draft fits: NO(12), MIA(13), OAK(14)
His height (6-1) and weight (299 pounds) might scare some 3-4 teams, but there is little doubt in my mind after watching him play head up on tackles last season that Rankins can do it all and did just that at Louisville. If you’re a 4-3 team that plays sides with their defensive tackles or a 3-4 team that gets creative with its fronts, Rankins is your guy. Over the past two seasons, only DeForest Buckner has a higher overall grade on the interior.

Don't see how anyone could be upset about this pick. It's not the flashy, surprise pick. And I'm Happy about that

Only because that was a read/react game and not a go get the QB game. Louisville adjusted their D to aTm's offense. You can tell his assignments were totally different watching his highlights vs another team.

I think he's a perfect fit. We could use one more monster on the interior and this team will be stacked for once. Cam and Kikaha will be getting lots of sack lunches NOM NOM NOM

It's a good pick but I also find it interesting that I believe it confirms that y'all will be 4-3, not 3-4.

He's too light to be a DT in a 3-4.

Cameron jordan was getting sacks playing inside and he's almost 15 pounds lighter

This is pretty common knowledge. Dennis Allen has always run a base 4-3. Rankins is versatile enough to move to DE when we shift to 3-4.

Which coincides w their move to the ACC as well. Not like he was getting it done against scrubs

Base will probably be 4-3 but there is almost no such thing as a base anymore. We are a bit of a hybrid. In a 4-3 he'll play DT/3 Tech. In 3 man fronts I think he would play DE.

I agree, but his versatility will allow him to slide to DE in any 3-4 sub packages.

Yeah, Rankins is a great pick for us IMO. We've been burned by Ellis and Sullivan and Grant. But I have faith in Rankins. I never loved those picks, but I love this one. Reminds me of a Pig Goff or Warren Martin type pick.

Rankins(Jr Year) was the 3rd best DL before last year's draft. The two guys ahead of him were drafted in last year's draft.

I'm loving this pick more and more.

The size thing is so overblown.

His proportions are great for his height. But some on here won't be happy until he lets himself go and shows up in NO with an extra 15 lbs of bad weight because that's what Internet GMs need to see in a prospect.
