Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times Union expects the Saints to let Drew Brees play out the final year of his contract.

The two sides have engaged in preliminary extension talks but it doesn't look like much progress has been made on that front. Brees will count an enormous $30 million against the cap this year but with the offseason pretty much over, there isn't much incentive to lower that number. There's little doubt Brees will remain with the Saints even if he hits free agency. The Saints have wisely recognized that extending Brees would only be a short-term cap fix. Starting his contract over from scratch looks like the way to go.

He's got 2 years left in him at most IMO. We have to move on eventually.

Not really going out on a limb at this point. And this isn't from a source but pure speculation.

Also they are dead wrong about extending being a short term fix. There are two ways we can go about this if we extend him.

The first would keep his cap effectively the same this year. Where this helps is we are giving him a portion of his guaranteed signing bonus this year and can have an easier out down the road should something happen.

The second would lower his cap this year but we can carry any unused portion to next year. Depending on structure this could give us even more space next year.

So it isn't a short term fix to extend him this year. Both ways can help in future years.

One more year, then we begin a new era!

It's been a great ride.

Did you even read it?

They go on to say even if he hits free agency they expect him to remain a Saint.

Just like Archie, Brees will finish his career somewhere else.

Not popular but the right thing to do for the franchise. I would trade him this year while he is under contract.
I am a huge fan of Brees, by the way.

I don't understand you people.

Brees contract could be 50 million a year and it would still be worth it to keep him. There is nothing we could buy with the money we spend on Brees that is going to get us anywhere near the level we are on with him

get ready for 2-14 and drafting a QB like Watson, Kaaya, or even a RB like Fournette!

Maybe the Florida Times Union article should have been consolidated in the

Odds Drew is in a Saints uniform opening day 2017
thread.

Anyone ready to move on and even encourages a move from Brees has absolutely zero football knowledge.

I'm honestly not even sure how they managed to find tigerdroppings.

I've never been a fan of kicking his contract down the road and I am also a fan of keeping him as long as possible.

The best fiscal and long term move for the Saints is to let Drew finish this contract and/or renegotiate towards the end of the season.

Let's get real here everyone loves Drew, no question! Last year was plantar fasciitis and some weak throws.what will it be this year? At least wait for next season to renew.
