Quality player with high character to replace Ben Watson.
Good size and very intelligent. Will thrive in this system with Brees.

If you were one to want Brees as a lifelong Saint you should appreciate this deal. Have to pay to put pieces around him so he can stay competitive. Brees and a bunch of rookies is pointless and with Watson and Colston gone they need an athletic vet, young one at that, to come in and contribute immediately. Hopefully Fleener gets a Brees boost and we see some magic btw the two.

the bigger issue is that this past year has shown that any decent TE will thrive in this offense.

Which is why Hill blew up?

Terrible deal. He's not a bad player at all but the deal is bad for us.

Lots of players were studs in college

I hope it works out for our sake. The history of this front office has just shown otherwise when dishing out big deals

Also he's only played 4 years so wtf did you get 6?

I think he is referring to Luck and Fleener playing together at Stanford and in Indy

7.2 mil/year average for this:

Just less than a month ago:
quote:

CBS 4 Indy's Mike Chappell anticipates free agent Coby Fleener commanding a deal worth roughly $4 million per year. The general thinking among Colts beat writers is that Fleener is more likely to be re-signed than Dwayne Allen, who's also a free agent. Fleener certainly presents more mismatches in the passing game, but Allen's superior blocking, toughness, and hands make him a more complete tight end. As the Colts are sure become a one-tight end, three-wideout offense in 2016, re-signing Allen would make more sense than Fleener, in our estimation. Whereas Fleener is best employed as a sub-package, receiving-only tight end, Allen can function on all three downs. Feb 15 - 3:17 PM

Glad to see the Saints have a pass-catching TE who isn't great at blocking yet still has inexplicable drops.

Oh, sorry Josh Hill, I wasn't talking about you. Sorry for not being clear.

Averaging 50+ catches for 600+ yards and 5 tds a year over the last 3 years is nothing?

People also forget that last year the colts were a mess and weren't they rolling with a hasselback? The salaries go up every year and so does the cap. We have a shite ton of money available next year and yes I agree that we could of spent this money elsewhere, it really isn't all that bad of a deal. Only time will tell though

They must have really liked Fleener in interviews. Not that he won't thrive under Brees but I think we could have snagged a much cheaper option at that position.

but he sure in the hell can catch.

Yeah, sorry. No he can't.

But while Fleener's role was important for Indianapolis, he was very inconsistent in that role.

Those red-zone opportunities? Fleener had just the eighth-best catch rate in the red zone on the team, nearly 25 percent worse than Dwayne Allen's red-zone catch rate. Though eight touchdowns on the season is great, three drops on potential touchdowns and two poor routes or adjustments to the ball meant that Fleener really should have had 12 or 13 on the season.

In addition to two drops on deep passes (leading to a below-average deep-drop rate of 18.2 percent), Fleener had four other drops on the season and was 29th among 39 qualifying tight ends with a 10.53 drop rate, per Pro Football Focus.

Fleener has struggled with drops and contested catches throughout his career, leading to a low catch rate. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Fleener caught just 55.4 percent of his targets in 2014, ranking 39th out of 49 tight ends (min. 30 targets).

Though Fleener raised his yards per catch to over 15 in 2014, making a low catch rate more acceptable, he still remained below average (as adjusted for yards per catch) over the last three seasons.

I'm interested to see what L Green got from Pitt. I'd put him and Fleener in the same ballpark. Both have great measurable as a TE but both lacked full playing time on previous teams.

Bigger question is how is he at running 4th and short end arounds?

Didn't say they were. But people are acting like they are nothing. Most teams' number two guy catches 50ish balls.

And I forgot about college so I stand corrected.

Triplett: #Saints can probably make Fleener's first-year cap cost around $3mil per year, so they still have enough cap space for 1-2 more deals

This is important to remember. Have any of y'all paid attention today? Mediocre CBs were getting 12M a year and shite. Teams know that the cap is going to continue to balloon. It is worthwhile To kick the can, especially for us considering we have a whopping 70 MILLION currently available next season.
