I think the Saints are insane for not getting a deal done yet. They're about to let a top 5 QB walk out the door after this season for nothing. On top of that, they could have had an extension in place before FA and made much more of a splash than they did, especially with much needed defensive help.

I get the 37 year old declining aspect, but when that guy led the league in passing despite missing a game just last year, that argument goes out the window. If we don't pay him the likely 23-25 mil/year he wants some other team needing a QB gladly will.

I don't see how or why we couldn't get a 3 year 60 mil deal in place with most of the money in the first two years. Or something.

Wait and see how he produces this year and then make a decision at seasons end based on the results. It makes absolutely no fiscal sense to break the bank on a 37 year old quarterback.

He had almost 5000 yards with one decent receiver last year, in 15 games.Doubt that's going to change much. He should break 5000 this year if he stays healthy. Won't be surprised at all if he walks.

...and you (saints) can't make a decision. It's his decision to make.

It's stupid. He is the saints. Should have locked him in with a contract.

We need to just go ahead and give him a 3 year/75 million dollar deal with the next 2 years guaranteed and move on with it. The longer this lasts the worse it is for both parties.

Loomis knows the Saints guards are a weak spot, and this could lead to Brees getting injured. No need to roll the dice before the season. They can offer him a contract when the season is over.

I hate to say it, but I agree. I think we get a deal done at end of season. Hopefully something team friendly but I doubt it.

Realistically, barring either a ghastly injury or Brees being MVP 2011 level it's not a risky move.

He gets injured this year, you're trapped for 2 years and probably 50 years. You wait, he costs maybe a million or two more per year (26-27? Annually).

If he plays his norm, he will still cost the same 25mil you were going to give him anyway.

So what.

If after this year the FO offers Drew what he wants I am almost sure that no amount would then get him to leave NOLA, the Saints, the fans and CSP.

I think it's safe to say that Brees is probably asking for more years and more dollars than that.

If the Saints offer to extend him 3 years at 20m/yr, he'd decline unless it's 100% guaranteed, IMO.

There is an obvious reason that the talks are stalled. Brees wants a TON of money.

Well we should have extended him 2 years ago just like in 2011. We let it get to this point with too many players. I'm glad we locked up Armstead early

Well it creates an open market competition

What he wants likely goes up, and you're still taking the risk. He could legitimately ask for $30m +/year.

I'd prefer not to play the "almost sure" game.

Drew's deal should be inbetween 23.4 and 24.7 ish per yr, hopefully a 4 yr extension or a completely new 5 yr reworked deal including current year.

can you provide a contract to justify drew asking for 30?

You do realize that both sides have to agree to a contract? It is not that easy.

Can you provide a top 5 QB hitting the free agent market since the explosion in cap and QB contracts?
