Drew Brees: No contract talks with Saints in last 3 months

METAIRIE, La. -- Drew Brees won't have a new contract in place before the New Orleans Saints kick off training camp, unless something changes drastically in the next few days.
Even though other quarterbacks like Andrew Luck and Joe Flacco have gotten long-term extensions done this offseason, Brees said Saturday that he and the Saints haven't even resumed negotiations in the last three months.
"Not sure why things have not progressed," said Brees, who is heading into the final year of his contract. "They made an offer in March, we made an offer shortly thereafter. And besides the Josh Norman deal [when the Saints approached Brees about restructuring his contract to try to fit the star cornerback under their salary cap], there has been no talk about a contract since."
quote:
Brees, 37, has suggested in the past that deadlines usually spur action in contract talks like these -- and there has been no real deadline in place so far, with the Saints content to let him play out the year with a whopping salary-cap figure of $30 million.
quote:
When asked if the start of training camp might serve as an unofficial deadline, Brees reiterated that he wanted a deal done by the start of the season on Sept. 11.
"I would say the deadline is the start of the regular season, not training camp," he said.
Brees said in May that he would not discuss his contract during the season. So if a deal isn't done by Week 1, it will have to wait until the end of the year, when he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
Brees, however, has insisted that he won't hold out or skip any practice time, and he fully participated in OTAs and minicamp. The Saints' veterans report to training camp in West Virginia on Wednesday.
Brees became the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history in 2012, when he signed a five-year, $100 million contract with the Saints. Since then, his $20 million average has been passed up 11 times -- including twice by Flacco.
Flacco signed for a record $22.13 million per year in new money in March. Then Luck shattered that mark with $24.6 million per year in new money last month.
The biggest sticking point in Brees' contract will likely be the guaranteed money because of his age. If Brees wants more than $60 million in guarantees like Luck, Flacco and a handful of other quarterbacks, that would be guaranteeing him money into his age-39 season.
Brees is still going strong, though. Although he has battled a series of nagging injuries over the past two years, Brees led the NFL in passing for the fourth time in five seasons last year with 4,870 yards in just 15 games played.

Silent treatment, nice.
Brees will break soon.

I think Loomis is trying the Michael Scott let Drew speak first tactic...BRILLIANT.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him leave next year in search of another ring. Wouldn't blame him either. Should have got the deal done by now. You snooze, you lose.

Wait and see how he produces this year and then make a decision at seasons end based on the results.
It makes absolutely no fiscal sense to break the bank on a 37 year old quarterback.

Why pay the spearhead of a decade's worth of historical offensive fire power when we can pay multiple players on a defense marred by ineptitude?
Loomis is playing chess. Everyone is still playing with checkers.

Name a team that's a QB away from being a legit competitor.
I've got Denver, KC, and Minnesota. That's it. Cincy would make sense, but they won't bench Dalton for 2-3 years. And Denver is the only team that would clearly be better than the Saints with Brees. I suspect that they won't be able to offer him as much money as we could. KC/Minny aren't good enough teams to join so as to "ring chase." Denver is the only 2001 Ravens type team out there. I'm upset that a deal isn't done yet, but Brees won a SB in NOLA and is very attached to the city. Even if it does give him a better shot at winning another SB, I don't see him leaving NOLA for Denver for an extra ~$5m over 4 years.
Even if Brees is better than the likes of Palmer and Newton, that's an awful use of cap space for teams like the Cards and Panthers to sign Brees.
ETA: Forgot the Jets, who would make sense for Brees. Still, a lot of teams could get a lot better with Brees, but there aren't many that could add Brees and be clearly better than the Saints are right now.

There's more to teams than defenses and QB's. The Saints have an elite LT (which is arguably the 2nd most important position in football). They have a very good center and solid RT. Guards are iffy. They have an average, possibly above average WR/TE group. They have average RBs.
And I think we'll have a defense in the 18-24 range. I think we'll have a good CB/S group. We have a stud DE. We'll have OK enough DT's. Only issue is at RDE (which is legitimately big) and LB (which is relatively unimportant vs DL and CB).

Would add the Texans to your list IMO FWIW FYI
May not be quite a Super Bowl team with the addition of Brees alone, but certainly wouldn't be far off and would go deep.

They crossed my mind. Stud DE and WR. Still, even though Brees helps a ton of teams, if you're going with the "ring chasing" theory, there are only 3 or 4 options and Denver is the only sure thing.

Lmao wut?
If the Jets or Vikings had Brees, they'd dominate their respective divisions and easily be a real threat.

Have possibly the best defensive player ever, playmakers at WR like you said. Top 5ish defense, went 9-7, and won their division wih Brian Hoyer taking the most snaps at QB.
BTW, even though I got the Stros logo, not a Texans homer of anything. Saints fan but get inundated with that shite every day on sports radio. So I've always thought Brees would make them very, very good.

Kansas City also has a stacked roster that's completely held back by having captain conservative at QB and "I need a new watch" coach
