Dexter McCluster should be the Saints top Free Agent target?

True or False?

I say True.

-Sproles has clearly lost a step at age 30. He was still respected by defenses, but just doesnt have the big breakway ability anymore.

-His cap# is $4.2 million this year. Cutting him to sign a young talented replacement like Dexter is what this offense needs. Kinda like Sproles did his first couple of years after Reggie left. We need to get back that big play ability from the back field.

-We desperately need a new kick/punt returner. It's been non existent these last 2 seasons. Dexter also fills that roll immediately.

If we cut Pierre, Moore and Cadet we could save another $8.1 mil against the cap. Our backfield could move forward with younger and overall cheaper talent in McCluster, Ingram and Khiry.

Add a big physical WR and a Center in the draft, and our offense should be good to go IMO. Obviously Marcel Jones or Bryce Harris would have to fill the RT spot if Strief isn't resigned.

Thoughts?

I see your point, but I don't think McCluster's the man for the job.

I definitely want him.

Plus, he should be priced reasonably since he hasn't set the world on fire in KC.
He hasn't been used to his potential, imo.

Should we?

I think we should go after him. The return game alone would be worth it. We need a spark there.

Yeah I think it would certainly be an upgrade as much as I love Sproles. Maybe not top priority though.

I say spend the extra bucks on a shutdown corner that like to hold players on every play like Seahawks corners .

This was brought up in the other thread and I'm still on the same train of thought. Sproles is or will be 31 before the season starts and while he is still a reliable receiving threat he isn't much of a runner or returner any more.

Cut Sproles and use the $3.5m to sign his replacement(who should actually be cheaper than that).

I still say keep PT because he is clearly our best pass blocking back and, while he may have lost a step as a runner, is still the best screen back in the game and also caught more passes than even Sproles this year.

From what I've seen of Cadet there is potential but he'll never be great. But you don't cut someone making minimum to save money(because you don't save money; you have to sign a replacement).

I'm still torn on Moore. The money we save cutting him is a sizable amount and I think you could find another good FA(doesn't even have to be WR) for that price that will probably be better bang for the buck than Moore. But he's still reliable and sits down in zone better than anyone we have now.

Moore, like Bunkley, just have paychecks that outweigh their snap counts. I'd really love to keep both but they need to take pay cuts.

We can find a McCluster or better in the middle of the draft

Don't want to crowd the last post even more. To answer the thread title no I don't think he should be our top target(though he should be a target). I think CB should be our top priority in FA. We could also use a veteran safety to put with Bush and Vaccaro.

After that, I think trying to retain Strief should be up there, but we have 2 backup options if he's too steep.

I wouldn't mind a smaller player like Bruce Ellington myself. I think he'll be a slippery slot WR. Even though he's smaller, I'll bet he won't have trouble getting open and obviously he has the speed to take it the distance if he gets the chance.

I also like Jarvis Landry. He seems like a steady player.

I understand your train of thought, but who exactly do you think we could target? Who will be a better #2 than White that is available and within our price range? There isn't really any options.

I think we should definitely try to keep Strief, especially now with the cap space.
Hopefully, he won't ask too much.

As for the backups, neither Brown nor Harris are anywhere near proven.

We've talked quite a bit about Munnerlyn.

He's the only name that falls within those parameters (IMO) and it will be very hard to pry him from Carolina without overpaying

maybe not.

Carolina isn't exactly in great shape with their money.

they haven't really been able to do much in free agency the last few years because of it.

Why? I don't see his skill set being close to Sproles, other than being able to line up wide. He might turn into a Pierre Thomas type.

The only thing I can remember him doing off the top of my head this year was catching a touchdown against the Pats. He really hasn't done much at all. Certainly not enough to give him the job.
