SHARPER EXPECTED TO BE A SAINT
Posted by Mike Florio on February 23, 2009, 6:40 a.m. EST

Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star Tribune echoes a tidbit we first heard several weeks ago: Vikings safety Darren Sharper won’t be returning to the team, and instead will be signing with the Saints.

Sharper will be a free agent as of midnight on Friday, and Hartman says that, while the Vikings will be trying to keep center Matt Birk and tight end Jim Kleinsasser, they’re ready to let Sharper walk.

The move makes sense, given Sharper’s age (33) and the presence of safeties Madieu Williams and Tyrell Johnson.

Sharper ranks 18th on the all-time interception list.

He seems to fit the budget. If they can get one useful year out of him it'll be a worthwhile move. I'd love to see a 2nd Rd pick added with a Delmas/Rashad Johnson. He could be mentored by a Sharper-type and eased into increased playing time.

GW stated that the safeties in his schemes were more interchangeable, not as divided between free and strong roles. That could be very helpful in scheming who plays in what packages together on different down and distance scenarios. I wouldn't be surprised to see versatile Gay back there some. We dunno if McKenzie will be back at all but that does sound like a good option for him too- especially if we add a first round corner in the draft. Maybe his old Packer buddy Sharper can show him the tricks.

If we sign him we'll be in this same situation next offseason.

I see him as Sammy Knight V2.0. Has about two more years left in him IMHO and can help teach the young guys. I like the move as long as we don't over pay.

I think he'll still be able to play. But i dont think it will be much different than what we have.

He's gonna be 34 and he had 69 tackles and only one pick last year.

Its a great addition

We've got no proven veterans in the secondary except for a questionable McKenzie. Were gonna need somebody to help coach up our youth back there.

Tackles is an overrated stat, also he didn't play the whole season

Well thats more reason not to sign him. He's old an injured.

I like Sharper a lot but I think we may get one decent season out of him at most. All that does is delay getting a young, long-term guy.

So? This off season has limited options for safety upgrades, especially with the Saints' cap room and minimal draft picks. Plugging a hole til next season is probably the best play we can make right now.

Sharper is too old and isn't the same player. Pass on him Saints.

This reminds me when Asante was going to be a Saint... only Asante was good.

If we cant find any better free agent guys, I agree with you since nobody in the draft is 1st round worthy. Unless Jenkins is converted

What long-term guy did you have in mind? Is there someone in the first round, because if you wait until the second day you likely won't find a starter.

I realize safeties have long been a weakness, and you would prefer to find "the guy" to put back there for a few years. But if the money is right, I think it makes sense to sign the vet short-term.

good move

sharper isnt going to make any pro bowls as a saint, but getting a vet with a ton of proven success is only going to help the scrubs we have back there now

This reminds me of the same old manuevers by the Saints. Putting a band aid on a open chest wound.

sad, but oh so true.....

no, really i think we may be suprised with what the saints are able to do this season with limited cap space. i trust these guys, and i know they will put a large mark on that secondary this year. no matter what, they'll get it done somehow. i know it. don't ask me how, i just do.
