It's kind of entertaining how many people just do not understand the situation with Butler. At all.

Patriots fans re really pissed off at me on reddit. I keep saying how it will be a sign and trade and they like "IT HAS TO BE PICK 11!! OR IT HAS TO BE THAT VALUE"

No, it does not.

no doubt the trade pieces have been worked out. Only thing left to do is for the Saints to come to contract terms with Butler. I'm hoping it's just a 2nd this year and a 3rd the following yr. Hope no one is setting themselves up for disappointment by thinking that 1 2nd rd pick is all it's gonna take.

I'm fine with anything other than ANY 1st round picks, this year or next.

Saints/Butler agree on contract.
Saints/NE work out a compensation, hopefully a 3rd.
NE rescinds their 1st round tender and issues a 3rd round tender, which Butler signs.
Butler signs with Saints.
NE doesn't match and gets our 3rd... done deal.

Na.

Saints/Butler agree on contract.
Saints/NE decide what draft pick(s) to trade for Butler
Butler signs his 1st round tender with NE
Saints/NE make the trade
Butler signs a contract with the Saints
Saints win the Superbowl & the Falcons don't make the playoffs

The Saints/Pats need to make this look like a spontaneous deal to avoid collusion

Do they, though? This isn't fantasy football. Two teams can trade whatever they want.

Sounds like pat fans are as delusional about the value of their players as we were with ours.

While you're right, this board was doing this exact same thing a couple days ago

They are melting on their message board as well. Went from celebrating that they would get Pick #11 and when the news was broken that wasn't happening, they are melting.

agree I'm 99.9% positive we can't get anything better than Butler in the 2nd or later. I'm only 80% positive we can't at 32. 50% at 11. That's enough doubt at both to not do it for a first.

Why would they do this

If they recinded the tender he would automatically become a FA. Actually he might pass through waivers first, I'm not sure

I did not read through this thread and I am sure I am in the minority but I don't want to trade for Butler. Keep the picks.

If so, they're in for a big surprise.

We have the upper hand by a wide margin. We can offer Butler just as much money as they can, we have the better draft picks for NE to choose from, We're closer to his hometown, we're already in negotiations with Butler, & he's already set up his visit with us for Thursday.

The only way they get him is if Butler would rather play for them over us.

Even if Houston has the better offer in a trade Butler and the Texans still have to agree to contract terms. Butler has a lot of control over the destination because Houston obviously won't trade for him if he doesn't sign the long term deal first.

My assumption is if both teams are trying to trade for him then the contracts would be roughly the same.

Otherwise you wouldn't be hearing about both teams trying to get him.

I doubt this because Payton and Bill have always been tight. At least this is what I'm counting on.
