Sometimes I think that this is like Poker where you either pay to see the hand or you fold and keep guess.

He can say it was 100% that he was taking Mahomes and that makes a Reid looks good...

How....what other team jad a trade happen where a team moved up or down just before their pick at least 4 times in the draft and pick a player who that organization definitely had on their draft board?

Even if it was leaked, I'm still good with our draft picks.

May be purely coincidence, but it does seem teams jumped us for players we were considering.

I think KC's move was more to get ahead of Cleveland (12) and Arizona (13) than New Orleans. KC probably knew the Saints MAY have been interested, but Cle and AZ definitely were. You have to remember, it takes to parties two trade. Maybe the price to get anywhere above #10 was just too high for KC. Maybe they tried to trade with the Saints at 11.

#32 is a bit different. Once a top LB fell I think every team had to believe someone wasn't going to let him get too far and the Saints seemed like a good candidate to be that team. The bigger evidence of a potential "leak" to me is Cleveland trading up 4 spots to take the TE out of Miami. Maybe they were worried Pittsburgh would take him, but the consensus was Pitt was going defense and I doubt anyone thought the Seahawks would be taking a TE. So that leaves only one team left to beat out, the Saints. Otherwise, Cleveland could have just stayed at #33 and taken him.

I didn't pay attention to every other teams pick but I doubt we're the only one's this happened to. This happens to teams every draft. I'm pretty sure front offices around the league are somewhat aware of other teams' needs

They probably called the Saints and we said no because the talent of tier 1 guys at 11 was ridiculously high.

Atlanta had no clue Riley was gonna be there. Seriously?

and Lattimore was gone. But the Bills would have taken Lattimore, leaving us with Mahomes.

Honestly it almost seems like divine intervention to make sure we had a better draft.

Lattimore
Ramcyzk
Williams
Kamara
Analzone
Hendrickson
Muhammad

or

Mahomes
Foster
Cook
Riley
Hendrickson
Muhammad
some 7th rounder who likely doesn't make it
Next year's second

I doubt the board was leaked, but it always seems like the "experts" have a lot of information on the Saints before they make their selections, every year. I think there are some loose lips in the war room, and I suspect they are at the top.

Contrast that with some other teams... the Steelers and the Patriots are good examples... you never know what's going on with them on draft day.

The Saints need to learn to keep their traps shut.

He said they would've considered him.

He later admitted, in the post day 3 presser irrc, that Mahomes was the pick if Lattimore wasn't there.

A Buffalo site said the Bills were taking Lattimore had they stayed put (makes sense after losing Gilmore).

Math says if no trade, we have Mahomes.

Yes, but I think it worked out in our favor....
The only disappointment was missing on Duke Riley...

They must be overly excited about their picks...and someone calls another team to say so thats why were taking so and so with the next pick...then another team moves up to swipe him.

Yes. This is what he technically said, without anyone prompting him about Mahomes:

quote:

Was it hard not to trade up to secure Marshon Lattimore?

"Yes, with that player (we) discussed with a couple teams moving up a pick or two picks up and then when it fell to two picks and they (Kansas City) drafted Patrick Mahomes and there it was for us then all of a sudden. That was part of the equation of (Marshon) Lattimore falling to us. Had they taken (Marshon) Lattimore then our next player we had Lattimore, then Mahomes would have been a guy we had real strong grades on."

Mahomes was going to be the pick if Lattimore wasn't there. Payton hasn't mentioned one other player when talking about it.

And he candidly shares this stuff every year. With Vaccaro he said Jarvis Jones wasn't in the same grouping, and then listed the positions of the other 4(?) options were aside from Vaccaro. This year he specifically named the targets for 32 (minus one because he was likely still on the board heading into day two).

For him to have talked about this a few times and not mention on other name pretty much says it was Lattimore or Mahomes or they'd trade back (which he also said they'd consider if neither was there).

Only you could post exactly what SP said, and argue he said something different

Mahomes was next highest grade on the board, Payton really liked him, and even Loomis (as well as Payton) said QB in round one was a real consideration.

And Payton never mentioned another guy besides Lattimore and Mahomes.

If you don't believe we were going to take him then I don't know what to tell you. He was going to be the pick.

In 10 minutes? Like everyone is on speed dial with open lines? And everyone's already discussed how to get it done that quick? The whole league is setting up the Saints? Eff Goodell is right!

Link to Sean's Presser

He never actually says that PM was the pick if ML wasn't there. But he does say he was next on the board. He starts talking about him at the 8:20 mark and then again around the 10:20 mark.
