WINNER: New Orleans Pelicans

After a spasm of deals gone bad, sometimes you just have to chill outside the frenzy, restock the draft pick cupboard, and recalibrate with fringe signings that fit around a centerpiece superstar. They executed quickie no-fault divorces with Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson, two no-defense sunk costs racing for the exits. Their expert shooting fit well around Unibrow's rim runs, but injuries eroded the rest of Gordon's game, and Anderson gave everything back as an unhideable front-line sieve on defense.

E'Twaun Moore, Langston Galloway and Solomon Hill are backups on a good team, and as the Pelicans cleanse away three years worth of moves, they will have time to build that team. They also got all three at backup prices in the new money landscape, even if at least one will open the season as a starter. Both Moore and Galloway bring more two-way value than several perimeter guys who received similar money, including Wayne Ellington, Jerryd Bayless and Austin Rivers. (It remains unclear why the Sixers, still mostly sitting out free agency after making noise about taking the next step, chased Bayless over a number of other options.)

All three can do enough off the bounce to attack scrambling defenders when the ball swings to them.

If Hill improves his jumper -- he hit 44 percent on corner 3-pointers last season -- he could emerge as a spot-up option capable of defending three positions and unlocking interesting small groups around Davis. New York fans thirsting for positives probably overrated Galloway; he's a league-average 3-point shooter who has been awful inside the arc, and at 6foot-2, he's at a size disadvantage defending wings. His 6-8 wingspan helps, and Galloway is fearless in big moments. He's worth a shot at this price, especially since the limited version of Bird rights the Pellies will have on Galloway might be enough to keep him if he hits free agency again next summer.

Buddy Hield fills a plug-and-play need, and re-signing Tim Frazier on the cheap was a no-brainer after his strong finish last season.

Zoom out, and this is still a muddled roster with $40 million invested in a sweaty, slippery-handed question mark at center in Omer Asik. They have less than a year to decide if Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans, starry names once heralded as long-term cornerstones, really mesh with the long-term vision -- or want to be in New Orleans. If they don't, well, that requires another remodeling job.

If the Pelicans had to make their case today to keep Anthony Davis through his early 30s, they would probably lose him. This summer marked the starting point in making a better case later.

Yeah, I saw an article on Foxsports as well yesterday that gave us an A-.

It seems like once the dust settled, the contracts we gave out were very fair and I really like the potential of the guys we brought in and their fit with our system.

I really really fricking hope we can stay healthy. We missed QPon so badly last year, not to mention all the millions of other injuries.

Saw that earlier. Really liked the Hill stat -- 44% on corner 3s last season. I wonder what the sample size was.

Getting all these guys back from injury is basically like a bunch of acquisitions in themselves. Missing Qpon for the entire season really hurt after he played such a good role in our playoff season.

Hearing Thomas Robinson and Quincy Acu are the two names at the top re: filling out the roster. Tyler Zeller discussed too

I'd be happy with any of those as an end of bench big.

give me Zeller over the other two. He's weak but has good touch around the basket and runs the floor like a gazelle. Robinson is worthless and Acy idk.

The "worthless" thing is getting annoying. Heard it with Babbitt, with Asik, etc

Not every player can be a star or even make Sportcenter highlights.

If you think a guy who played both PF and C last year and was one of the 5-10 best defensive rebounders in the entire league is "worthless", then your overall opinion means exactly nothing

It's worthless

I'm sorry, a guy who played 12.9 minutes per game (and even started 7 of them!) was a top 5-10 defensive rebounder in the league? Let me guess, you're one of the guys who thinks every summer league star is a HOF lock.

You just proved me point. Thanks. Move on to a board with more simple minded fans. Thanks

In a way I hope we do sign him, so he under performs he like he has everywhere else he's played, so I can see you do a 180 and rant about how inept our front office is.

I don't like Robinson simply because I'm not certain of his attitude. On the court, he's a fit, but I really don't want to mess with what they are trying to create culture-wise.

I don't know much about Acy. Zeller would be interesting.

I wish they'd go speak with Hansbrough. I've always admired his tenacity.

non-knowledgeable fans call TRob "worthless" because he didnt live up to his draft position...its stupid. robinson does one or two things really well and thats enough at the end of the bench. even a "worthless" player like austin rivers can be useful if you dont ask him to do more than he is capable of

this team's problem is that they repeatedly put limited players (90% of the league is "limited") in positions they cannot succeed in. the good teams have playmakers that can adapt to most game situations, and role players to do one or two things in limited minutes

if you start or play robinson 30 mins a game he's going to fail. if you insert him for a rebounding lift or as a small ball C strategically, he'll look great

ok 'worthless' talk aside it comes down to what you're looking for off our bench. Robinson provides defensive rebounding and toughness. Not much offensive game but could be good for a few points off the bench. Not sure about these attitude questions.

Zeller is charmin soft but has decent offensive game that I think would go well in Gentry's alleged system. He has a good midrange, great soft touch around the basket, and runs the floor really well. If you're looking for stout defense and rebounding, probably want to look in another direction.

None of these guys are even average. And that's why they are still available. But worthless is a lazy evaluation. They all have worth in the right, limited situations

This front line needs somebody who can grab boards. It doesn't need scoring IMO. I would rank the three- Robinson, Acy, Zeller personally. If I wanted what you described with Zeller, I got DC and Ajinca to do similar things

I seem to recall us chasing Acy before. Not sure how we could get Zeller unless Boston rescinds his QO. I would think Robinson or Acy could be had at minimum. Robinson is a solid rebounder. What about Miles Plumlee?

Honestly, it's just a waiting game. All these guys are trying to find a team with space to pay them first. Then, will see if a contender or a team with a big role to offer will give them the min. We come into consideration after that
