Why don't we play Zone defense?

I understand that it's rarely used in the NBA, but we have zero chance against a team with quick guards off the dribble.
Last night all 4 of the Mavs guards got into the paint at will. Looking back at Dragic and Westbrook as well.
Personally, I'd rather give up 3s all game than to see us give up 50 points in the paint to guards. I'm not sure if this would help, but something's got to change. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Actually, it's not illegal.

Zone defense is not illegal.
And Rick Carlisle is known to use a zone defense at times. And it is effective in limited use to give the opponent a different look.

Well I'm assuming the OP is talking about a 2-3 zone cause I doubt he's referencing a match up zone or box and 1. By default that puts a defender in the lane and most likely not guarding someone. That's what I meant by illegal.
Edit: And really the main point here is if someone thought zone was full time effective they'd use it regularly. Since it isn't it is rarely used.

We actually did play zone for at least one possession last night. I distinctly remember one of our guys looking lost.

We played a bit of zone at the beginning of the season when Asik, Davis and Anderson were all on the floor.

Rick Carlisle uses a 2-3 zone.
And a player can be in the lane not guarding anyone for a limited amount of time.

I had a long response and it got cleared so cliffs:
We do zone. It's awful. Monty's man scheme is suspect at best. A Monty zone scheme is likely eye gouging.
You don't need to play zone to make this happen. The Mavs were DARING Tyreke to shoot all night and packing the paint. It's just Carlisle vs. Monty.
Last night was the perfect example of how far Monty still has to go. He's improved as a game manager as of late, but you see him vs. Carlisle in that 2nd half and can't help but go "Oh shite. That's what a top tier coach looks like."
Unfortunately. Carlisles don't grow on trees, and it's unfair to compare Monty to that type of coach because we don't have access to that type of coach. In fact, throughout the season, I don't think I have seen a better in-game coach than Carlisle PERIOD.

You do realize they are playing NBA teams, and not LSU.
You think an NBA team shits in their pants and says "oh no, they are playing zone. What to do? Oh well, i'm shooting this 3"
Zones work for 2 or 3 possessions and the right lineups on both sides of the court, and by right lineups, i mean a lineup full of guys that can't shoot and are idiots.
There's a reason you don't see zone or pressing in the nba. b/c it doesn't work on superior athletes with a brain.

Common misconception that the zone d is illegal in the NBA. I do hate the 3 secs in the paint rule for a defender though.

It's only 3 seconds if he isn't within arms-length of an offensive player. If he is within arms length, he can stay in the paint as long as he wants.
A center can pretty much stay right around the basket.

I know that and I still hate the rule

Ok, so I'm finally off work and can respond. Playing a zone in the NBAis not that comical. Yes it is not the norm, but using it in 2-3 min spurts to get a team out of rhythm would be smart IMO.
We are on the road and give up a 16-0 run to start the 3rd, I would have welcomed zone with open arms to try and affect that run.
A team averages 30-40% from 3. What do teams average in the paint: 40-50%? So yeah regardless of whether we are playing NBA teams or LSU, I take my chances giving up the 3s.

When you turn the ball over and miss shots for over 6 minutes in a row without one make, giving up 16 points really is not that bad.
