Well, this certainly is a nice surprise to wake up to. I like the move. Didn't think it was possible.

I like the pick up. Nice 3 point shooter, if I remember correctly

NOOOOOOOO. Oh God no. I was so hopeful that we might be able to have a decent defense with Ryno gone. We replace him with one of the 2 or 3 forwards in the league who can match his utter terribleness on defense.

Terrence Jones was 561 out of 562 players in the NBA last year in real plus minus. He is horrible.

Would have taken Robinson over him by a long shot. He has just been so bad recently, particularly defensively. He is young though, so there is hope. Hopefully this is a league minimum deal.

It can't be much more than that, I think they had roughly 1 mil in cap space before this deal. He can battle Cunningham for minutes at backup PF, and if he proves to be a good fit he can can maybe take some minutes from Ajinça, pushing AD to play more center.

I can't wait until he destroys Harden on the court.

It's a league minimum deal. It's unlikely he'll get major minutes unless he's playing well or we are fricked injury wide again.

If you look behind the numbers, there's reason for optimism. It's low risk, high reward.

Looks to me like there is no deal and someone jumped the gun a bit

bullshite. Pelicans haven't diagnosed a defensive poison and kept them off the court since the Chris Paul era. Defense is almost completely ignored in decisions of who will be on the court.

Wrong. It's zero reward and high risk that we'll put him on the court instead of somebody who's not a bottom 3 defender in the league and all around garbage player. People are already starting to make the Ryno fallacy. "well defense isn't his strength, but his offense makes him a great contributor." His defense isn't below average. Its abysmal. He bleeds buckets and has no chance of making up for it on the other end of the court.

I agree with this. Unless he was close to being out of the league with no offers, I have to think the promise of playing time was made to someone that shares an agent with AD.

His Defensive Real Plus Minus was terrible last season, but it was positive the previous season. I guess we'll see how serious/permanent the effects of his injury are.

Two seasons ago, at the age of 22, Jones started 77 games for the Houston Rockets. He averaged 12 points, 6 rebounds and 1 assist per game. Jones advanced metrics were where he really shined. He posted a 19.1 PER, a 2.2 VORP, and a 119 offensive rating paired with a 104 defensive rating. Since then, however, it has pretty much been all downhill for Terrence Jones. In the 2014-15 season, he suffered an injury that kept him out most of the season.

In 2015-16, among the turmoil of Houston's poor start, Jones fell out of favor with the coaching staff and started in just 11 games and only played in 50 games total. His PER diminished all the way to 13.5 and he posted the first negative rating of his career at 105 on offense and 109 on defense.

Supposedly AD was personally recruiting Jones. If it's a min signing for one year, it's definitely worth the gamble that he regains play from 2 years ago. His injuries have mostly been of the freak and not recurring variety...peroneal nerve damage, collapsed lung...etc. Maybe with a healthy offseason and a change of scenery playing with a familiar face, he can be a productive player again.

Hopefully change of scenery will do him some good. Would be nice to see AD recruit some difference makers.

Even if Jones doesn't show a giant leap in improvement this year, (sadly) he would probably still be leaps and bounds better than most of the guys currently on the Pelicans roster. Consider this, in his worst season he averaged a 13.5 PER. Dante Cunningham, Alonzo Gee, and Quincy Pondexter haven't had a PER that high in the past two seasons. *Cries!*

The thing I like most about Jones game, is that he is actually a two-way player. For his career, he has a 114 offensive rating and an 105 defensive rating. The Pelicans are in desperate, desperate, desperate need of guys who can play on both sides of the court. While Jones isn't a good three point shooter, he is an effective scorer with a career average 51% from the field.

I'm fairly certain that I read that Jones switched agents at the beginning of free agency.

ETA: I think there is an over-reaction going on about his play. At most he would be taking the minutes of Cunningham and Ajinca. Those are not world beaters on either end of the floor.

K. That's why almost every player they signed this offseason is a good defender than can switch on multiple positions. They clearly traded Offense for Defense this offseason, and good system defenders as well.

A minimum signing guy that was once good and now isn't, that is still young, isn't something to lose your shite over.
