He gets paid, counts against the cap for this season, etc. It is fairly meaningless, all things considered, though it does eliminate an expiring contract that could be used in a post-season, pre-July 1 trade. Likely this means he was not needed for any deals that may be on the burner, so, again, largely meaningless.

McNamara made an interesting point on the twitter. No one claimed Greg Smith off of waivers, we could have picked him up and given him a trial run instead of an end of career seat filler like Ely.
