Jason Smith put up 0 points on 0-5 shooting and pulled down an impressive 2 rebounds in 11 minutes tonight.

I don't know. I think it depends on the team and the system/situation they have. I like that Smith can play the 4 or 5 and he is a good effort guy. Ajinca is a pure Center and a bit of a stiff, but he trys hard too. Neither is really great. But I think Smith's versatility and speed gives him a bit of an edge. I'll take talent/skill over size. He wouldn't see any minutes on this team though. So going with Ajinca makes sense. Not sure why they need Withey and Young though. If they want a big project, they should just pick one or get rid of Ajinca. 5 bigs is enough, unless one of them can play SF a little bit (Anderson?). But I don't see that happening..

All I ask out of Ajinca is 3pts/3rebs in 10-15 minutes of play. That is all you expect and need with AD/Asik/Ryno each playing 30-38 minutes a night.
As for depth, we just need Rivers and Jimmer to be serviceable in what they SHOULD do.
No need to be 10 deep like SA, 8 deep is good enough.

The drop off in quality after the top 6 is staggering. There might not be one single guy that's above replacement level. There is no bench guy that deserves more than 15 minutes a night. And I'm not sure how many deserve even that much. For as much shite as people give the Blazers for having a terrible bench, the Pels are just as poor.
If Monty doesn't keep at least 2 of his top 6 on the court at all times, things will get pear shaped in a hurry most nights. You can plug some of the perimeter guys in as complements and get away with it. But if Evans starts, rolling all bench like Monty has done will be a disaster.

The Blazers actually don't have an atrocious bench, with Steve Blake, Chris Kaman, and Dorrell Wright. Now the Rockets are another story. They have a bench that is just as bad as the Pels. It definitely get hairy after the sixth man for the Pels.

I'm not quite as pessimistic about the bench as some of you are. It's not as deep as some, no doubt, but I think it's serviceable enough for now, all things considered.
I actually was pleasantly surprised with what Ajinca can bring. He's hardly what I'd call a "stiff". He can give some minutes in spite of foul issues.
I was skeptical about the Jimmer signing, but I've been more impressed than I expected. If he can come in and hit shots without being a complete swinging door on defense, he'll serve his purpose.
Honestly, I can't think of many teams that really can go beyond 8 or 9 deep with consistent success.

This team is still 1 or 2 key injuries away from not good. It will be interesting to see if Asik brings enough to the team to let us survive a Ryno injury. Or maybe if Asik is making the defense legit, he's the one we can't afford to have go down. We are no San Antonio that's for sure.

I'm not that pessimistic about the bench as others are either.
I think as the 4th big, Ajinca brings something. He actually has some offensive game and is a big body needed for a few minutes a game.
I think Rivers has gotten better and is serviceable as the 4th Guard.
Jimmer brings some offense and spacing.
None of those guys are starters. If anything happens to Tyreke, we are essentially fricked because we have NO competent Small Forwards on the team at all. So in terms of "starting ability", this team is paper thin. Role players, I think we are ok.

That's for sure. SAS can just plug and play guys and barely miss a beat.
We sure as shite can't do that.

People have been over looking Babbit. He has been looking decent knocking down the 3 and decent on defense.

I like Smith, but I'd rather a center who doesn't just chill outside and shoot 18 ft. jumpers. No thanks.

It's not that they can't be useful. There are skills from most of them that can help and complement the core guys. I worry about how the rotations will go.
Just my opinion, but if Monty wants to rotate 5 bench guys in at once, he can't start Evans. Rivers, Jimmer, SF, Anderson, Ajinca is a near Sixers level lineup.
But if he mixes and matches the minutes, there are good options
For instance, any bench perimeter combo with Evans, Anderson, Asik is very intriguing to me

maybe we can make them some bvd's on how to shoot a free pointer
Posted on 10/21/14 at 9:47 am to Fun Bunch
My main issue is that I don't think the rotations will be good. If the Pels have only one starter (or top 6 player) on the floor at any time, they will be terrible. They need 2-3 top 6 players on the court at all times for this team to work.

The last CP3 year did have some 5 man bench units, but the bench guys also spent quite a bit of time playing with a decent amount of starters.
Willie Green's top 3 minutes lineups had him playing with 3 to 4 starters. LINK /
The same for Belinelli LINK /
and Jason Smith LINK /
and Marcus Thornton LINK /
Jarret Jack spent about half his time with starters the other half leading the bench unit that would become "his team" the following year. LINK /
Looking at these numbers I wouldn't expect a 5 man bench unit to get that much time, maybe 10 MPG? I think Monty's rotations would have been even tighter that year if it weren't for the fairly even 3 man battle at SG.

Well, no. That's one of the teams I think of as having an incredibly deep roster.

Rivers - Salmons - Babbitt - Anderson - Ajinca
they were awful @ wizards and figure to be awful all year. this is one experiment that cannot work, and must be abandoned
also, generally speaking, this team as a whole fouls WAY too much.
