Question regarding Cousins

I, like most people I know, have not seen Cousins play other than the games against the Pelicans in the past. I know he isn't a traditional back-to-the-basket big man, but I'm continuously frustrated at the amount of time he spends on the perimeter. The team, and Cousins, would be much more efficient if he spent most of his time down low.

Can anyone who saw him play with the Kings tell me if he played the same way in Sacramento? Is this something that we should come to expect, or is it a product of the system/coaching we have in New Orleans?

He has moved out further and further every year. His average shot distance was always 7, 8 or 9 feet from the rim. Moved out to 11 in Sacto this year and is nearly 13 in NOLA so far

I could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure I remember reading or hearing that while Cousins is taking more shots from outside, he still leads the league in post ups this year and last year.

Do you think he just goes on the court and chooses where he is going to stand? Or, do you think there are plays that the team attempts to execute ( ), that determine where he should stand?

After watching him with the Pels, I feel like he prefers to play outside because he gets abused in the low post and rarely gets foul calls.

I think both are likely true.

I don't think the contact and physicality bother him, look at how he throws himself to the ground so often on layups. Much of the game his body language is that of a fat offensive lineman, he's "resting" on the 3 point line a lot of the time. He's kind of like Asik with enough offensive skill to not get benched when he half asses it.

Judging by last night, they need to stop running the offense to him and more through him... I think he fumbled the ball off or shot some ridiculous shot looking for a foul on 90% of his post ups last night. He was a big reason they lost it down the stretch

Because you don't give the ball to the center and just sit back and watch. That's preschool ball. Every offense has and needs a flow. If you don't have that it's shite

McMillan talked about that on the pod. It it isn't really by design. AD and Boogie both love staying out of of the paint and they also are trying to figure out how to stay out of each other's way.

Great interview When he talked about AD/Boogie working together he seemed to imply it's their chemistry more than scheme, or maybe the scheme will follow the chemistry they establish? We didn't really get an answer to how they will be used other than they still need to figure it out. If you can do any followup questions with him, can you ask him what the basic plan is? For instance he mentioned specifically that Jrue is effective playing out of the Horns formation, what has worked well for AD/DC when they're on the court together? (the triangle article you did comes to mind).

Good questions! I'll have to loop in with him again sometime to get better answers. He definitely implied it was more chemistry than scheme, also just their tendency. He talked to Andrew Smith, one of the other guys at BSS, during warmups and echoed the same thing. That AD and Boogie just like to hang out on the perimeter and they as coaches need to figure out how to get them in the paint or post more.

Not a ton of rolling to the basket by either guy out of PnR. More pick and pop for both guys. Not sure how much of that is coaching

I don't think the scheme is quite as much of a problem as people think it is right now - it's more of an issue of lack of outside shooters. Think about it - AD and Boogie are still both putting up incredible numbers, and they both have significant range (not the worst 3 shooters and they can hit the "long" mid-range shots, not just 12-15 footers. If they camp out in the post all game long, the defense will just camp out there with them because our other guys can't hit the WIDE OPEN shots that other teams afford us. Getting the ball further outside spreads the defense out a bit more and gives AD and Boogie the chance to have a cleared lane once they get by their guy, or to just hit the outside shot.
Consider this: if we made just 2-3 more 3 pointers a game, we win a significant bunch of games that we're losing right now. Think of how many games we're in late recently that we let get away when we just can't hit those few crucial open 3s in the last couple minutes. Add 9 points to our score and see how many games that flips. And if we had 3 point shooters that the defense had to respect, that opens the lane even more for AD and Boogie regardless of where they receive the ball.
Boogie was a fantastic get for us in the long run. But we lost Buddy, Reke, and Galloway to get him and replaced them basically with D-leaguers who aren't stellar 3 shooters. None of the guys lost was phenomenal (though Buddy will be), but you could pretty much count on at least one of those 3 to get hot and can a few 3s each home. I dreaded the lost of Casspi - even he would have made a difference on this team in the short run. We need an offseason to pick up a few decent shooters. We don't even need another star to become a 4-5 seed team, just a few decent role players of the caliber we had to give up to get Boogie.
