Justin explains, around the 34 minute mark, some of the offers the Pelicans may have turned down for soon-to-be free agent Ryan Anderson. One such player who comes up specifically is a target high on the list of many Pelican fans; K.J. McDaniels.

Verrier: I heard there is a possibility they might have landed the same deal Detroit got from the Rockets with Motiejunas and maybe even K.J. instead of Marcus Thornton. That was something but then obviously the medical records just didn't work out there.

This might all be rumors, but the idea of turning down even an Anderson for McDaniels straight up swap blows my mind.

McDaniels can't beat out Corey Brewer for minutes, very very likely to be an end of the bench guy for the entirety of his career imo.

I agree with Boom that McDaniels is pretty trash. Sure KJ is better than nothing, but even if there's any truth to this (likely not) it's not like we missed out on anything.

i'll have to go back and find the article, but the thought on deals like that was that a resigned Ryno, will be a better bargaining chip for a future trade...

or that the Sign and Trade Ryno could net an equal player in pick form.

At the time, Ryno's Bird Rights were worth 10x more than a KJ alone.
Especially to a team where he really might be tempted to resign.

I like that this front office envisions a starting lineup that would have KJ deep on the bench. Perhaps internally they think they are favorites to resign Ryno. I hope they don't misjudge that situation.

McDaniels isn't some prize, yet looking at his current form or PT is the wrong way to think about this.

Pondexter was hot garbage his last year and a half on a Memphis team that needed wings as much as the Pels. He only came to NO as part of a salary dump. Now he's seen as a key rotation piece for the Pels. They need guys who can play on the wing. McDaniels has some obvious and serious holes. Yet, he's young, athletic, and cheap for the next few years.

This team wasnt going anywhere and won't be any sort of top 4 seed in the next couple of years without getting very lucky on players. And I doubt Anderson will be a part of that team if it ever exists. It's not a no brainer or some sort of Demps SUXS!!!111!, but I would understand doing an Anderson/McDaniels type move.

McDaniels is good on D. Sucks on O. He can throw down some dunks and that's about it.

But I think Anderson kind of sucks so I wouldn't even do that trade. McDaniels has some potential to develop a 3-point shot and be a decent role player. Anderson is one of the worst defensive players I've ever seen and his offense isn't as good as it used to be.

Do you even Harden, bro?

Honestly, his offense showed some improvement this year. He has used his dribble a little better and his post offense is definitely better.

All that said, he needs to be on a team with perimeter defenders to cover for him. Houston is not that. Him and Harden on the same defense would require the Houston PA guy to download the Benny Hill Theme.

The main takeaway is that Dell said we didn't move Anderson because the offers were really bad. This is just one example of a trade that might not be a runaway win for us by any means, but getting a 23 year old wing (our weakest position) who is already a super athletic defender would be a nice get opposed to getting nothing for him this summer. Would be curious to know what other offers were turned down.

Ehhh he's still the leading scorer in the league off the bench in the NBA. Jrue will probably pass him on that by the end of the season though.

ETA: This season is his 2nd highest PPG of his career and his highest points per 36 mins.

Maybe he is. I don't know it's not like a watch him a lot. But from what I've seen I just thought he wasn't as good as he used to be.

Harden isn't great on defense either... but this thread isn't about Harden.
