the new TV money is about to go up big time... would it behoove him to take a 2 year deal (player option 2nd) and try to make the beyond big bucks when the new money comes up?

I don't have time to look it up now, but I think it has to be at least 3 years. Not sure of the rules on when player options can start though.

I want him to be our version of Tim Duncan and keep him in one place

I don't claim to know anything about sports contracts...

maybe the structure will make it like he's getting the deal when new money becomes available

It will be interesting to see if he says $140 million? Yes please! Or $140 million? Let's think about this.

The player option played a big role in getting cp3 and Love out early.

Hopefully he stays and wants a deal that will allow the team to have the most freedom to sign help for him

EVERYONE is saying he needs "help"

It's not like you can buy a star at the store

He deserves the money now. He can't take the paycut on his second contract. He'd be smart to take a 1-2year deal though

Why would he take a 1-2 year deal(and risk injury) when a max is locked in?

Yeah he deserves a ton right now but that's not how it works and I'm sure he gets that.

Because the max today will a lot be less than the max in 2 years.

The 5 year 140 offer is a strategic one for the team.

So theoretically what is the difference in money to take the extension now instead of two years from now?

Not really. It doesn't start until the salary cap increase starts and it's based on a percentage of cap that only the Pels can give him. It then raises 7.5%, again a raise only the Pels can give.

Again his extension doesn't go into effect for another year, and that's the first year of the salary explosion.

His contract would kick in at the same time as the salary increase and a max deal is based on percentage of the salary cap. Even if the CBA changes for more money to the players in 2017 it would benefit AD even more. By taking a 5 year deal he would average at least $28M over 5 years but most likely more. This is way different than the deal CP did and every player in the league would take this deal after their rookie contract.

It'd make more sense to wait, from a money standpoint. Issue is there's so much risk thay it isn't worth it. I think he is going to take the 5yr/140mil, you just don't risk that money this early on in his career. His second contract will also be a max contract as well given his trajectory.

After all of this, I'm not sure that's true.

Yeah. I really don't think it is. Basically, people either don't understand that his max extension will kick in 16/17 (the year the cap explodes) or they are anticipating the cap jumping from $89M to $108 in 2017- which may very well happen.

If it's the former, they are just misinformed. If it's the latter, it's tin foil hat time. He would have to be willing to pass up a guaranteed ~$140M this July for the chance to get more 2 years from now. There's betting on yourself and then there's insanity. That would be insanity. If he's that worried, he will make sure he gets a player option in year 3 of his extension. This is an absolute no brainer extension. I will be shocked if he doesn't come to an agreement early July 1.

Let's be honest, no superstar turns down that money. In the grand scheme of things it's too big of a risk. One career ending injury and he loses 100+million. All for possibly getting the chance to get an extra 30-40million? Hell, he's going to get a second max contract at the next as well at the rate he's going.
